    Job Description

    JOB SUMMARY

    The Town of Prosper is currently seeking qualified and dedicated individual
    for the position of:
    Fire Inspector/Investigator.

    Hiring Salary Range: $74,168.64 - $84,972.16
    Salary Range: $74,168.64 - $90,359.36

    Under limited supervision, performs technical and specialized inspection work examining buildings for life safety, building construction and specifications to determine compliance with the Town of Prosper Fire Prevention Code; responsible for coordinating all field inspections and reports; and, performs fire prevention education.
    The intent of this position description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by incumbent(s) in this position. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties in this description and incumbent(s) may be required to perform position-related tasks other than those specifically listed in this description.

    EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

    Essential Job Functions:
    • Advises supervisory personnel of any field conditions that are potentially hazardous and/or controversial.
    • Provides direction and/or technical assistance to contractors and property owners on building projects.
    • Conducts fire safety inspections of places of assembly, businesses, industrial, institutional, schools, and public food service establishments for existing or potential life and fire hazards, and assures that all occupancies are in compliance with local and state fire prevention regulations.
    • Prepares and submits reports relative to findings from fire safety inspections. Orders corrections of hazardous conditions and provides follow-up inspections and/or enforcement as necessary.
    • Inspects projects under construction for compliance with fire codes.
    • Maintains inspection records and statistics as required.
    • Performs commercial fire plans review on new construction and renovations during the absence of the fire plans examiner.
    • Inspects fire alarm, sprinkler and special hazard systems and works with owners with regard to false/unwanted alarms.
    • Responds to complaints from the public and coordinates resolution with the fire department.
    • Assists local school district with in-house life-safety issues, fire drills, etc.
    • Participates in fire safety training classes.
    • Reviews pertinent technical reports.
    • Presents fire prevention education and public relation programs.
    • Additional Duties
    • Performs other related work as required.
    • In the event of an emergency, all employees are considered essential personnel and may be required to perform alternate duties.


    ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS

    Required Knowledge and Skills:
    Knowledge of:
    • NIMS 100, 200, 700, 800. (Obtain 300 & 400 within 12 months of employment)
    • Fire inspection procedures, including NFPA 101, International Building Code, International Fire Code, International Mechanical Code, NFPA 10, 13, 13R, 17A, 20, 22, 24, 30, 58, 70, 72, 80, 96 and NFPA 2001.
    • Construction methods and materials.
    • Fire safety codes.
    • Policies, practices, procedures and terminology.
    • Federal, state and local applicable laws, rules, regulations and guidelines.
    • Best practices for research techniques.
    • Skills and techniques for creating letters, spreadsheets, databases and various reports.
    • Business letter writing and report preparation.
    • English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation.
    • Computer skills using Windows, WordPerfect, Microsoft Office applications, Internet, Adobe Acrobat and conversion techniques, and Microsoft Outlook.
    Ability to:
    • Demonstrate a high level of interpersonal, oral and written communication skills to develop and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, government officials, Town of Prosper departments and contractors.
    • Function effectively as a member of the Incident Management Team, in accordance with National Incident Management System (NIMS) protocols during emergency or disaster situations.
    • Work as part of a team or independently to accomplish complex tasks simultaneously.
    • Work effectively with the general public and Town of Prosper departments.
    • Evaluate the proper installation and testing of fire protection equipment.
    • Develop and administer a comprehensive public fire education program
    • Determine fire safety hazards and explain the need for corrective action.
    • Work effectively with the general public, building trades and Town of Prosper departments.
    • Calculate occupant load for various occupancies.
    • Review, interpret and record site and construction plans for deficiencies and specifications.
    • Recognize existing and potential fire and casualty hazards in a wide variety of structures and installations.
    • Communicate clearly with contractors, the general public and Town of Prosper departments.
    • Demonstrate good customer service skills.
    • Research technical data accurately, efficiently and timely.
    • Prioritize and organize various assignments in order to produce efficient results.
    • Operate standard office equipment.
    • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
    • Understand and follow written and oral instructions.
    • Provide tactful and appropriate responses to inquiries from the public, other departments or agencies.
    • Establish and maintain cooperative-working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
    Education, experience, Certifications and license:
    • Preferred associate's degree with emphasis in Fire Science Technology, Engineering or Architectural Degree or National Certifications in Fire Protection Systems.
    • Three (3) years experience with fire inspections, plan review, or fire prevention service.
    • Must pass MVR check.
    • Must pass pre-employment drug screening.
    • Must hold a TCFP (Texas Commission on Fire Protection) certification as a Fire Inspector.
    • Must hold a TCFP (Texas Commission on Fire Protection) certification as a Fire Investigator.
    • Must possess a valid Texas Class C driver's license.
    Preferred qualifications and Certifications:
    • TCOLE Basic Peace Officer
    • TCFP Arson Investigator
    • TCFP Structural Firefighter
