    Job Description

    CACVB Director of Marketing and Public Relations

    Charlottesville Albemarle Convention and Visitor's Bureau

    Full-Time, 12 months
    Exempt, Pay Grade 35
    VRS-Eligible, Benefits-Eligible

    Job Summary/Objective:

    The Director of Marketing and Public Relations plans and implements marketing and PR strategy to achieve the CACVB’s objectives and performance measures as outlined by the City and County in the joint operations and following the region’s tourism master plan.

    Supervisory Responsibilities:
    • Supervises and provides support to the CACVB Marketing Manager, Social Media & Content Manager, and CACVB interns.

    Essential Functions:
    • Develop and execute marketing and public relations strategy to meet the goals of the CACVB; stay current on market research/trends/best practices.
    • Manage marketing and public relations projects that involve multiple external contractors and vendors (graphic designer, videographer, copywriter, search engine marketing vendor, website developer, etc.)
    • Design and oversee development of collateral and digital marketing materials. Provide direction to and maintain strong working relationships with (selected and prospective) vendors and contractors.
    • Develop strong relationships with travel media and content creators through press release distribution, pitching, fact checking, itinerary development, familiarization (FAM ) tours; maintain strong working relationships and regular communication with travel media.
    • Knowledgeable with best practices in crisis communications.
    • Administrative functions - time entry, County transactions, negotiating and coordinating purchases through County procurement policies, vendor registration/onboarding.
    • Oversee the media buying process for ads as well as development and placement of advertisements—both digital and print; negotiate rates with ad sales reps through the County budgetary processes.
    • Manage and oversee the CACVB Marketing/Advertising/Public Relations budget and partner with Engagement and Sales on promotional budget needs.
    • Oversee and monitor metrics of various marketing and public relations initiatives to demonstrate success.
    • Maintain strong relationships and regular communication with local and regional tourism and hospitality industry community.
    • Performs various other activities as required.

    Competency: Knowledge/ Skills/Abilities:
    • Demonstrated background in executing successful public relations and marketing campaigns tracked with performance metrics.
    • Ability to lead and inspire others while providing critical feedback for professional development of the Marketing Manager and the Social Media & Content Manager.
    • Adobe Creative Suite and Microsoft Office; internet-based programs, such as the Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system, Content Management System (CMS) and social media management platforms like Sprout Social.
    • Ability to effectively communicate through writing and speaking to multiple audiences across many different mediums; ability to pay close attention to detail; ability to meet strict deadlines.
    • Ability to assess multiple, complex tasks or projects and service demands then develops processes to address them. Equitably and effectively assigns responsibilities to others in order to accomplish projects and meet service demands. Anticipates and identifies potential problem situations and develops strategies or policy for resolution.
    • Demonstrates skill and proficiency in integrating the performance management of several functional or operational areas.
    • Demonstrates strong skills in prioritizing tasks and recognizing when plans and projects need to be modified.
    • Ability to utilize internal and external resources to address problems and to carry out decisions. Uses integrated project management to coordinate several complex projects and deploy work breakdown structures for identifying work, assigning resources, and estimating time allocations.
    • Evaluates performance metrics, process design, and output (of several differing functional areas) to determine needed improvements creates plans to meet identified needs. Applies systematic multi-factor analysis, trend analysis, and other forms of data analysis and assessment to a diversity of operations and programs for the purpose of planning and managing resources. Provides the specialized consultation and advice needed to finalize strategy, polices, and regulations.
    • Serves as final approval subject matter expert with whom other managers and professionals throughout the organization may consult in matters of management decisions, budget, operations, programs, or other areas of specialized knowledge and expertise.
    • Understands the roles/responsibilities and interactions/interdependencies of all units and divisions within the organization.
    • Directs efforts to improve processes, procedures, methods, technologies, tools, equipment, terminology, standards, performance measures, and outcomes of work teams, units, and specialty areas on an organizational level.

    Required Education and Experience:
    • Experience or education equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university.

    Preferred Qualifications/Certifications:
    • 1-3 years of direct experience in a destination marketing organization, attraction, hospitality, or other related field.
    • Strong knowledge of communications, research, marketing sales, public relations, writing, and understanding relevant trends in travel and tourism.
    • Practical hands-on experience in travel and tourism industry.

    • CDME
    • APR/CEPR
    • MBA/MTA

    Physical and Mental Requirements:

    Work is typically performed in an office setting.
    • Work will generally be performed during normal business hours, but ability to work occasional evenings or weekends is required.
    • Work will generally be performed within the County but occasional travel, including overnight stays, may be required.
    • Regular contact with clients as well as appointed and elected officials.

    Remote Work:

    This position is eligible for a hybrid remote work schedule that is in compliance with the County’s Remote Work Policy and meets the operational and service needs for the position. All County staff must maintain residence within the Commonwealth of Virginia.

    The Salary Range:

    The hiring range for this position is $39.64 - $43.81 hour (approx. $82,443 - $91,121 per year.) Starting offer is based on applicable education beyond minimum requirements and internal equity. The position also provides excellent benefits including 12 paid holidays, paid vacation and sick leave, health insurance options with employer contribution, employer-paid life insurance, VRS retirement, and continuing education/training opportunities. This is a full time, FLSA non-exempt position. Internal candidates will receive pay adjustments in accordance with Local Government Personnel Policy, §P-60.
