    DESCRIPTION

    The Department of Public Works is seeking candidates for a provisional Mechanical Supervisor job opportunity in the Facilities Management Division of the Public Service Bureau.

    Interested candidates must meet the requirements to file listed under the minimum requirements heading. Pending Human Resources approval, the selected candidate will be appointed to the position on a provisional (temporary) basis with no guarantee of permanent employment. The provisional employee must apply, compete, and obtain a reachable position on the eligible list for Mechanical Supervisor when an examination is conducted in order to be considered for appointment to a permanent position. Provisional appointments are valid through the establishment of an eligible list.

    Note: This is a provisional opportunity. All provisional appointments are temporary and valid until a priority or eligible list becomes available for the classification. Provisional appointments are valid for 150 days unless extended and approved by Human Resources. If you want to be considered for this position permanently, you must go through the examination process. If you are not selected to fill the position on a permanent basis, your provisional appointment will be terminated. For City Employees: if you hold permanent status in another classification, you will be reinstated back to the position you held before the provisional appointment.

    EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

    • Plans, supervises, and/or performs the installation and maintenance of heating, ventilating and air conditioning systems, elevator and escalator systems, and electrical systems; • Ensures that systems and associated controls constructed and maintained for the City under private contract conform to specifications;
    • Ensures that building complexes and appurtenances are appropriately maintained;
    • Establishes operating procedures and work standards;
    • Determines job requirements, estimates material and labor costs, and requisitions materials;
    • Prepares or assists in the preparation of contract specifications for the alteration, repair, or maintenance of building complex facilities;
    • Ensures that crews are properly supplied with materials, tools and equipment;
    • Plans, develops, coordinates, and supervises a system for providing emergency repair services;
    • Develops and maintains safe working practices and enforces strict conformance to safety regulations;
    • Selects, trains, assigns, and evaluates the work of subordinate personnel;
    • Maintains records and prepares reports;
    • May operate and maintain pneumatic systems and equipment;
    • May install and maintain boilers and hot water heaters, storm and sewer pumps, and fire sprinkler systems;
    • May develop and coordinate a computerized energy management system;
    • May assist in the development and management of a budget;
    • Performs other related duties as required.

    REQUIREMENTS TO FILE

    • Four years of recent experience in the maintenance, repair, operation, and installation of mechanical and electrical systems;
    • Experience must include the installation and maintenance of heating, air conditioning, ventilating, and refrigeration equipment in major building complexes;
    • One year of recent experience as a supervisor of employees highly skilled on such systems;
    • A valid driver's license and a current DMV driving record must be submitted to the hiring department at time of selection.
    DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: Building Owners and Managers Association (BOMA) certified; possession of a Building Operator's Certificate; Heating, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC) certification

Candidates who possess degrees from colleges or universities from outside the United States must attach proof of educational equivalency at the time of filing.

Those candidates determined to be best suited for the position will be invited to participate in the selection process, which will include an interview by a selection panel and may include a performance exercise.
