EXAMPLES OF DUTIESUnder direction, supervises and coordinates the work of others, formulates and coordinates work assignments and reviews plans, design estimates, survey and inspection reports of natural gas pipeline facilities; supervises, trains and evaluates assigned professional and technical staff; supervises the preparation of specifications, the compilation of estimates and contract terms from an engineering standpoint; provides expert mechanical engineering and operational input on large-scale planning, design, and construction; performs responsible supervisory and specialized professional work in mechanical engineering; administers and manages construction contracts; may oversee the management of multiple projects, including scope, schedule and budget definition; manages project execution with multiple stakeholders; performs special studies, prepares comprehensive reports, and recommends energy-saving improvements and energy reduction programs; provides technical and managerial direction to mechanical and electrical technicians regarding design and troubleshooting of a variety of building systems such as HVAC, plumbing, and instrumentation systems; participates in the work of subordinates; and performs other related duties as required.
REQUIREMENTS TO FILEApplicants must meet
ALL of the following requirements:
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Engineering (proof required) * OR an Engineer in Training (E.I.T.) certificate (proof required) *; AND
- Current registration as a professional Mechanical Engineer in the State of California (proof required) * OR current registration as a Mechanical Engineer in another state (proof required) * and the ability to obtain registration with the State of California as a Mechanical Engineer prior to completion of probation; AND
- Five (5) years paid, full-time equivalent experience involving primary responsibility for preparation or review and approval of standards, designs and cost estimates of mechanical engineering projects. One year of the required experience must have been gained in a position requiring registration as a Mechanical Engineer.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: - Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
Willingness to work nights, weekends, holidays, overtime, and respond to emergencies as required.
A valid motor vehicle operator's license and a current DMV driving record must be submitted to the hiring department at time of selection.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge and experience with transportation of natural gas by pipeline, minimum federal safety standards as applicable to natural gas pipelines (49 CFR 192); corrosion control systems, National Association of Corrosion Engineers (NACE) requirements, principles and practices of gas measurement and pressure regulation; natural gas engineering and distribution operations; Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems, and ArcGIS (ESRI), SynerGee Network Modeling, AutoCad or other engineering applications and project management are desired for some positions.

Screening of applicants will be conducted on the basis of application and required supplemental application submitted. This selection procedure will be conducted using a continuous non-competitive process, which means applications are evaluated solely on training, experience, education, or certification. All applicants meeting minimum qualifications will be place on an eligible list. Applicants receiving Veteran’s Credit will be placed on the eligible list first and then in the order in which applications were filed. This is a continuous eligible list, which means eligible lists may be established periodically and may expire six months from their effective date. Applicants may apply only once during a four-month period.
Applications received by Tuesday, December 30, 2025 will be placed on Test #01 eligible list. Based on the number of applications accepted, the selection procedure may be changed. In the event a revision is necessary, the affected persons will be notified.
