    San Bernardino County Land Use Services- Building & Safety Division is seeking a skilled Senior Building and Safety Technician* in the Mountain Region to support safe development and exceptional customer service.

    The Senior Building and Safety Technician will assist the public and staff in understanding building codes, permit requirements, and related regulations. This position reviews complex permit applications and construction documents for completeness and compliance; conducts preliminary plan checks; calculates fees; updates permitting systems; and researches zoning, hazard overlays, legal descriptions, and property records to ensure accurate processing.

    Serving as a lead technician, the incumbent will provide guidance to staff, recommend procedural improvements, and may represent supervisory personnel in meetings. Strong communication, technical review abilities, and a commitment to teamwork are essential.

    This position requires regular attendance at two (2) office locations in the Mountain Region: Big Bear and Twin Peaks. Candidates should be comfortable splitting their work schedule between both sites based on Department needs. Reliable transportation and flexibility to travel between the two locations are essential.

    ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

    The Land Use Services Department is dedicated to ensuring a balance in the areas of housing, business, and recreational needs for the diverse cultures and communities of San Bernardino County. This is accomplished through comprehensive regional planning and enforcement of building standards, land uses, and environmental impacts.

    The Land Use Services Department continues to improve the quality of life for residents and visitors to San Bernardino County by providing a framework for orderly growth while maintaining the highest level of public safety.

    Building & Safety is a division of the Land Use Services Department. Building & Safety's primary responsibility is the enforcement of Building Standards adopted by the State of California and San Bernardino County. These standards include the California Building, Electrical, Plumbing, Mechanical, and Energy Codes, and Disabled Access Regulations contained in Title 24 of the California Code of Regulations. The goal of the permit process is to ensure that buildings which are constructed meet minimum code standards necessary to protect the public’s health, safety, and property, and to promote energy efficiency and accessibility for disabled persons. Building and Safety also investigates complaints regarding unpermitted construction and accessibility violations.

    CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

    Pre-Employment Process: Prior to appointment, candidates must undergo a background check, which includes fingerprinting and a medical exam.

    Location Assignment: This position requires regular attendance at two (2) office locations in the Mountain Region: Big Bear and Twin Peaks. Candidates should be comfortable splitting their work schedule between both sites based on Department needs. Reliable transportation and flexibility to travel between the two locations are essential.

    Travel: Travel throughout the County may be required and employees will be required to make provisions for such transportation.

    Sponsorship: Please note San Bernardino County is not able to consider candidates who will require visa sponsorship at the time of application or in the future. Candidates must be able to present their legal right to work in the United States.

    Minimum Requirements

    Candidates MUST meet the Experience requirement in order to qualify.

    EXPERIENCE: Two (2) years of full-time equivalent processing, reviewing, and conditioning permits or land use applications for, or enforcing, code compliance related to land use, building, construction, fire, environmental, or other code regulations, which include explaining related regulations and requirements to the public.

    SUBSTITUTION: International Code Council (ICC) Certification as a building technician or other related ICC certificate will substitute for six (6) months of the required experience.

    Desired Qualifications

    The ideal candidate will be process driven with the ability to lead a team in providing customer service. This candidate must be able to work in a fast-paced environment while making sound decisions and handling unforeseen conflict. Demonstrated skills in mentoring and training fellow staff is highly desirable.

    The ideal candidate will possess:
    • 3+ years processing, reviewing and conditioning permits or land use applications.
    • Process driven with the ability to lead a team.
    • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
    • Making sound decisions in a customer service environment.
    • At least 1 year of knowledgeable experience in Accela.
    • Possession of 1+ years leading or supervising staff.
