The Clerical Assistant will assist with preparing, reviewing, and processing a wide variety of legal documents, digital media, confidential records and correspondence.
- Provide clerical support to attorneys; screen and route phone calls; provide information to the public; and perform reception duties in a legal office.
- Prepare and maintain confidential case files; file legal documents; and process forms and related requests.
- Prepare daily calendars; assist attorneys with case file management; and process discovery documents and files.
- Perform general office duties; print documents; make copies; scan documents; and store and organize digital media.
- Provide vacation and temporary relief as required.
Note: These are
recurrent, non-regular, limited duration positions classified as a Public Service Employee (PSE) . The successful candidate shall be considered at-will throughout the term of their employment and will not attain regular status.
ABOUT THE PUBLIC DEFENDER OFFICE The Law Offices of the Public Defender San Bernardino County is a county department that is staffed with attorneys licensed by the State Bar of California. The attorneys who handle cases in court are called Deputy Public Defenders. In addition to attorneys, the Public Defender employs Investigators to fully investigate cases handled by the Department. The Department also has a unit of social service practitioners and support staff to ensure the best holistic representation for clients.
The Public Defender will be appointed to represent any criminal or civil commitment defendant who cannot afford to hire an attorney, unless the office has a legal conflict of interest with that defendant’s case. The Public Defender represents adults and juveniles charged with misdemeanor or felony crimes, and individuals facing involuntary civil commitment for mental disorders or commitment under the Sexually Violent Predator statute.

Using a holistic approach, the Public Defender seeks to increase client opportunities for achieving self-sufficiency. In addition to providing legal defense, our agency also seeks to arrange client access to social service programs and assistance with receiving alcohol and drug rehabilitation services and counseling for mental health issues.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT Background: A background investigation will be conducted, including a DOJ/FBI fingerprint check and drug screening.
Employment Status: This position is extra-help, and incumbents do not attain status as regular County employee. Although this position is of limited duration and temporary in nature, assignments may be up to twelve (12) months. This position will participate in the County's Deferred Compensation Plan and does not earn any other benefits.
Availability: Must be available to work Monday through Friday from 8am-5pm.
Travel: Travel throughout the County may be required and employees will be required to make provisions for such transportation.

Minimum RequirementsOption 1: Six (6) months of experience performing clerical tasks in a law office, which includes processing confidential correspondence, answering phones, taking messages, managing client files, processing legal documents, and supporting attorney staff.
Option 2: One (1) year of clerical experience in an office environment.
Desired QualificationsAn ideal candidate is someone with clerical experience in a law office environment.
