    DESCRIPTION

    Salary Information:
    Grade I: $33.254 - $45.216 Hourly
    Grade II: $35.883 - $48.785 Hourly
    Grade III: $37.720 - $51.274 Hourly

    EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

    Under general direction, performs State and Federal compliance activities and meter installations associated with the delivery of natural gas to gas utility customers; surveys for leaks; operates, paints, inspects, maintains, monitors, repairs, installs, troubleshoots, and removes natural gas distribution valves, pressure regulators, controls, commercial/industrial meter set assemblies, and other pipeline facilities; investigates and repairs leaks on gas distribution pipeline facilities; responds to, locates, and marks Underground Service Alert requests; writes reports of work performed and prepares reports on daily, weekly, and monthly metering information; reads and interprets sketches or diagrams of pipe system layouts; and performs other related duties as assigned.

    This is not an inclusive list of duties. Additional examples of duties are detailed in the Human Resources approved Gas Field Technician I-III class specification.

    REQUIREMENTS TO FILE

    Two years of experience as a Gas Construction Worker II or Gas Field Service Representative II or equivalent position.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
    • Knowledge of natural gas pipeline distribution systems;
    • Knowledge of industry standards and principles for construction, installation, repair or maintenance of natural gas distribution systems;
    • Ability to safely lift and move objects weighing up to 50 pounds;
    • Ability to enter confined spaces;
    • Ability to work from heights;
    • Ability to operate a computer, tablet, or other electronic devices;
    • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing, and
    • Ability to perform mathematical calculations.


    Willingness and ability to work an alternative work schedule, overtime, weekends, holidays, irregular hours, and be on-call, as needed.

    A Department Operator Qualification certification for the tasks relating to the job assignment (i.e. Corrosion Control, Leak Survey, Telemetry, Underground Service Alert Response, or Valves and/or Regulator Station Maintenance) must be obtained prior to passing probation and maintained as a condition of employment.

    Subject to the Federal Department of Transportation Pipeline and Hazardous Material Safety Administration’s (PHMSA) Anti-Drug & Alcohol Misuse/Prevention Program.

    Valid California motor vehicle operator’s license.

    A minimum rating of 70 must be attained in order to pass the examination. Certification by score bands will be considered based on analysis of exam results. The resulting eligible list will remain in effect for at least one year. Screening of applicants will be conducted based on application and required supplemental application submitted. Only those candidates showing the strongest backgrounds on the basis of comparative analysis will be invited to the examination process. Based on the number of applications accepted, the selection procedure may be changed. In the event a revision is necessary, the affected persons will be notified.
