    DESCRIPTION

    Salary Information:

    Grade I: $24.992 - $34.103 Hourly

    Grade II: $27.645 - $37.695 Hourly

    Grade III: $32.878 - $44.602 Hourly

    EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

    Under general supervision, performs residential, commercial, and industrial gas appliance and service work; turns gas/water services on and/or off; uses tact and discretion in dealing with customers; cleans, paints, inspects, maintains, and repairs all types of equipment used in natural gas distribution; installs and adjusts gas meters, regulators, and other parts, fittings, and materials employed in the distribution of gas; adjusts customer appliances; investigates gas customer complaints and repairs leaks on gas distribution parts and appliances; reads, calculates and records gas meter consumption; reports unsafe conditions and illegal connections; writes legible and accurate reports of work performed; operates hand-held computers and computer terminals; receives calls from customers and dispatch personnel; operates a City vehicle incidental to the primary assignment, and performs other related duties as required.

    REQUIREMENTS TO FILE

    Six months of full-time equivalent experience involving the use of hand and power tools along with the application of mechanical concepts to perform daily job activities.

    OR

    The completion of two or more courses in any of the following: Air Conditioning and Refrigeration, Machine Tool Technology, or Welding may be substituted for the required experience (proof required) *.

    *Proof of required documents, such as degree or transcripts and or certificates, must be uploaded to the online application at the time of filing. Degrees must indicate the field of study and transcripts must indicate field of study and degree conferred date. Candidates who possess degrees from colleges or universities from outside the United States must attach proof of educational equivalence at the time of filing.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

    Candidates must possess all of the following:

    • Knowledge of hand and power tools and the application of mechanical concepts.

    • Ability to deal tactfully and effectively with customers.

    • Ability to perform problem-solving mathematical computations.

    • Ability to write in a neat and legible manner.

    • Ability to learn the operation of computers and two-way radios.

    • Ability to lift up to 75 pounds and move heavy objects up to 50 pounds.

    • Ability to work from heights.

    • Ability to enter and work in confined spaces.

    • Ability to perceive color, sound, and smell within a normal range.

    Willingness and ability to perform shift-work and work overtime, weekends, and holidays.

    Willingness and ability to work in an office environment when necessary.

    A valid motor vehicle operator’s license.

    All employees in this classification are subject to the Federal Department of Transportation Pipeline and Hazardous Material Safety Administration’s (PHMSA) Anti-Drug & Alcohol Misuse/Prevention Program.

    A minimum rating of 70 must be attained in order to pass the examination. Certification by score bands will be considered based on analysis of exam results. The resulting eligible list will remain in effect for at least one year. Screening of applicants will be conducted based on application and required supplemental application submitted. Only those candidates showing the strongest backgrounds on the basis of comparative analysis will be invited to the examination process. Based on the number of applications accepted, the selection procedure may be changed. In the event a revision is necessary, the affected persons will be notified.
