DESCRIPTIONThe Department of Library, Arts and Culture has one (1) immediate opening for an unclassified, part-time,
LIBRARY AIDE (NON-CAREER) - STUDIO GUIDE. Under the Senior Librarian's direct supervision, Studio Guides assist patrons with questions, Makerspace equipment, workshops, and other interactive library resources. The Studio Makerspace serves as a community workspace where people can meet, socialize, innovate, and collaborate using technology and resources. This position will report to the Billie Jean King Main Library, located at 200 W. Broadway, Long Beach, CA 90802, but may be required to work and/or travel to various library locations across the City.
Non-Career employees are allowed a maximum of 1600 work hours over 12 months and are considered temporary, at-will employees who are not typically eligible for benefits. However, non-career employees may qualify for health coverage and sick leave accruals subject to applicable federal and state provisions. The incumbent in this position will typically work 18 to 24 hours per week. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES- Assist patrons with basic to advanced questions regarding Makerspace hardware, software, equipment, devices, and research needs;
- Assist patrons with the use of public computers, visual, audio, and interactive resources, including editing, production, and creation of digital content;
- Provide and assist with maintenance, troubleshooting, and inventory control;
- Provide and coordinate workshops, outreach, basic orientation, and instruction for in-house and online library resources;
- Respond to general library inquiries regarding resources and services;
- Assist with maintaining good behavior and discipline within the Studio Makerspace;
- Keep up with the latest trends and updates in software, apps and DIY/Makerspace culture; and,
- Performs other duties as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS TO FILE MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: - Experience equivalent to six months of full-time clerical experience involving significant amounts of alphabetical and numerical filings
- Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing, follow both verbal and written directions, and to type 20 net words per minute
- Ability to lift up to 40 pounds and maneuver book trucks
- Willingness to work part-time and irregular schedules, including evenings and weekends
- A valid driver's license or the ability to arrange necessary and timely transportation for field travel, may be required for some assignments
DESIREABLE QUALIFICATIONS: - Bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish
- Experience with Adobe Creative Suite or similar software
- College coursework or technical certificates that emphasize digital media
- Students currently enrolled in a Master of Library and Information Science program are encouraged to apply
SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATES WILL DEMONSTRATE: - Knowledge and ability to work with various mediums, including video and audio
- Knowledge of 3D design software and 3D printing/printers
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to learn new technologies
- Strong content creation skills (storyboarding, editing and production)
- Ability to provide positive customer service to a diverse population
