The annual salary listed for this position includes the additional $0.75 per hour maximum security stipend ($1,560 anually) for full-time positions domiciled in a maximum security institution. Conducts quantitative and qualitative chemical analysis to detect, verify, and analyze composition and possible contaminants in environmental and/or agricultural samples; evaluates and interprets results; participates in special studies on water; conducts routine instrument maintenance according to manufacturers’ instructions
Prepares reports detailing the results of analysis and studies; documents calibration checks; utilizes a laboratory information management system to generate work lists, monitor work flow, track quality assurance/quality control, and enter analytical results
Applies gravimetric, colorimetric, and wet chemistry methods to accomplish quantitative analysis of samples; analyzes samples for the presence and concentration of pesticides, herbicides, metals, and other pollutants using chromatography; interprets and evaluates results
Adheres to laboratory protocols and quality assurance/control procedures to ensure defensible and valid results of chemical analysis and interpretations; conducts peer review of data packets verifying the validity and quality of sample test results; ensures compliance with state and federal regulations; participates in the annual review of standard operating procedures and recommends modifications; assists other Chemists interpreting and applying analytical methods/standard operating procedures/laboratory protocols/ procedures
Develop and insure all finished product formulations and manufacturing instructions are accurate, documented, and on file.
Develop, document, and maintain on file Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for all finished products.
Document and maintain on file Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for all raw materials.
Communicate with raw material vendors as needed.
Follow OSHA, EPA, FDA, DNR guidelines and DOC policies for handling and use of hazardous materials.
Some direct supervision of offender workers when mixing liquids and powders, using personal protective equipment (PPE), proper handling of raw materials, proper operation of equipment, and special instructions as needed.
Exercises independence in the performance of duties; receives general direction; performs other related work as assigned
Minimum Qualifications: Four or more years of professional experience in the field of chemistry, or related field.
(Earned credit hours from an accredited college or university that includes earned credit hours in chemistry may substitute on a year-for-year basis for the required experience, at a rate of 30 credit hours for one year)

- A $2.00 per hour shift differential if you are assigned to a shift that begins on or between 12:00pm (noon) and 5:00am and are employed at a 24/7 congregate care facility (i.e. institution, transition center, supervision center, or command center).
- A $1.00 per hour restrictive housing stipend if you are assigned a regular post within a restrict housing/segregation unit at any facility.
The Department of Corrections currently offers a guaranteed 1% pay increase for every two years of continuous service up to 20 years!
