    Please note: The salary range listed in this job description is a base salary. Applicants eligible for years-of-service adjustments or shift differentials may exceed salary range listed above.

    This position will be located at the Missouri Geological Survey, 111 Fairgrounds Rd., Rolla MO 65401. Regular work schedule is Monday through Friday, 8:00am to 5:00pm, with occasional field work and overnight travel.

    As the Environmental Assistance Unit Supervisor, you will lead a team of geologists and work with internal and external stakeholders to provide technical guidance for a wide range of environmental projects including geohydrologic evaluations of wastewater treatment facilities, solid waste landfills, rural housing developments, centralized animal feeding operations, and many more. As leader of the team, you will support the core values of the Geological Survey Program which include Technical Competency, Service, Professionalism, Ingenuity, and Cooperation and the mission and values of the Division and Department.

    This position does supervise other staff and is required to possess, or be able to possess within 3 years, a Missouri Registered Geologist’s (RG) license.

    • Lead a high-functioning team of geologists to accomplish the goals of the unit.
    • Provide quality control and quality assurance for fiscal components and deliverables for all funding sources.
    • Supervise and motivate others, manage employee performance through coaching, team building, and delegation.
    • Develop and maintain strategic plans for the Environmental Assistance Unit.
    • Work closely with external and internal partners to ensure work product is appropriate and timely.
    • Coordinate and communicate with internal partners to provide technical support and project guidance.
    • Develop and maintain an understanding of federal and state statutes, and regulations related to wastewater protection, solid waste management, and US EPA Region 7.
    • Implement strong project management skills to ensure efficient use of resources and quality deliverables for a variety of geologic assignments, including budgeting time and fiscal resources.
    • Respond to inquiries regarding sinkholes and other geologic hazards in Missouri.
    • Attend professional and technical development trainings.


    • Licensed as a Registered Geologist in the State of Missouri


    To be successful in this position, a candidate will need the following skills:

    • Project Management -Balancing workload, time and energy to prioritize work products.
    • Geological Science: Knowledge and application of the concepts, principles, theories, and methods related to the investigation and evaluation of subsurface soil and geologic conditions and properties for the purposes of geohydrologic evaluations.
    • Customer Service: Anticipates and meets the needs of both internal and external customers. Delivers high-quality products and services; is committed to continuous improvement.
    • Team Building: Inspires and mentors team commitment and excellence, spirit, pride, and trust. Facilitates cooperation and motivates team members to accomplish group goals.
    • Oral and Written Communication: Expresses information to individuals or groups effectively, consider the audience and nature of the information; makes clear and convincing oral and written presentations; listens to others, attends to nonverbal cues, and responds appropriately.


    Equivalent to those typically gained by:

    • Master’s degree in geology or closely related field and a minimum of 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours of credit in geology and a minimum of 4 years of relevant experience.

    Preferred qualifications:

    • Training, certification, and/or education in continuous process improvement programs such as Lean Six Sigma as well as completion of Missouri Way, Leadership Academy, and similar programs is preferred.
    • Additionally, this position can require the ability to lift 50 pounds, work alone in remote areas, walk long distances in hilly and rugged terrain, climb steep slopes, carry geologic specimens out of the field, and use shovel, hand auger, or hammer.
