Job Summary Under the supervision of the Associate Director of Facilities Operations, the Facilities Operations Chief Engineer provides technical management and leadership for the Central Plant and the Control Specialists. The Central Plant operates and maintains the campus central boiler/chiller plant, heating hot water and chilled water distribution systems, chilled water thermal storage system, and air conditioning and refrigeration systems campus wide. The Control Specialists maintain the campus Building Automation System currently utilizing the Siemens platform.
The incumbent manages several campus maintenance services and supply contracts, serves as primary design reviewer for a variety of small maintenance, repair and replacement projects; and develops and administers a campus-wide Building Automation System (BAS). In addition, the incumbent serves as a member of the long-range strategic planning group for the Facilities Operations department. To ensure quality construction for Cal Poly, the incumbent reviews project designs for conformity with campus engineering design standards, codes of construction, and best practices. This position has some contact with the public, involving department and outside staff, vendors, and contractors for the purpose of exchanging information pertaining to project assessment, procedures, materials, and timelines.
Department Summary Facilities Management and Development (FMD), a unit within the Administration and Finance Division (A&F), is responsible for the planning, design, construction, operations, maintenance, and repair of university facilities, grounds, and infrastructure. FMD consists of four critical and interdependent support departments, including Customer & Business Services; Facilities Planning & Capital Projects; Facilities Operations; and Energy, Utilities & Sustainability. Key Qualifications - Demonstrated experience in the design, maintenance and repair of central plant systems and components and building HVAC systems.
- Thorough knowledge of effective personnel management practices and supervisory skills including a demonstrated ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality.
- Demonstrated experience in effective leadership and team management with a proven ability to organize and manage teams.
- Thorough knowledge of project management techniques related to maintenance, renovation, and new construction including skills in design, planning, scheduling, staffing, purchasing, budget, and quality control.
- Demonstrated ability to understand, interpret, communicate, and apply federal and state laws, CSU and university personnel policies, and collective bargaining agreements.
Education and Experience - Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or related field AND five (5) years of progressively responsible experience working in a large maintenance department with at least two (2) years in a management/supervisory role.
Salary and Benefits Anticipated Hiring Range: $112,000 - $130,000 per year. Note that the offer is calculated based on the background and relevant years of experience of the individual selected.
