    This position will be located at the Missouri Geological Survey, 111 Fairgrounds Rd., Rolla MO 65401 with significant time in the field.

    As a Geologic Hazards geologist in the Environmental Geology Section, you will work to perform geologic studies and investigations that describe the occurrences of and potential for geologic hazards in Missouri through office and field work, digital mapping, data collection, data analysis and interpretation. You will produce geologic maps and mapping products which highlight geologic hazards such as landslides, sinkholes, mine collapse, and earthquake hazards. Other major components of the position include maintaining geologic hazards databases, preparing technical reports, coordinating with other agencies, responding to citizen and legislative inquiries, attending meetings, seeking new funding opportunities to support geologic hazards education and understanding in Missouri, and conducting training and presentations to educate the public on environmental geology and geologic hazard issues in Missouri. You must be capable of learning to use Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and other laboratory equipment involved in geologic sciences and work independently. This position does not supervise other staff but is required to possess, or be able to possess within 6 months, a Missouri Registered Geologist’s (RG) license. As part of the Environmental Geology team, you will support the core values of the Geological Survey Program which include Technical Competency, Service, Professionalism, Ingenuity, and Cooperation and the mission and values of the Division and Department.

    • Perform geologic studies and investigations that describe the occurrences of and potential for geologic hazards in Missouri.
    • Perform office and field work, digital mapping, data collection, data analysis, and interpretation.
    • Coordinate and communicate with internal and external partners to provide technical support and guidance for geologic hazards.
    • Revise and maintain the Missouri Inventory of Landslide Occurrences (MILO) database and the Missouri Geological Survey’s Earthquake Plan.
    • Use ArcGIS and other computer-aided hydrogeologic modeling programs to develop Geologic hazard products and tools for internal and external partners and stakeholders.
    • Use project management skills, including budgeting of time and fiscal resources.
    • Communicate with and educate internal and external partners and stakeholders regarding geologic hazards and other environmental geology issues in Missouri.
    • Respond to public inquiries regarding sinkholes and other geologic hazards in Missouri.
    • Attend professional and technical development trainings.
    • Seek new funding opportunities through grants, manage funding sources, and develop and maintain a budget.
    • Maintain professional credential as a Missouri Registered Geologist (RG)


    This position requires eligibility for licensure as a Registered Geologist in the State of Missouri.

    To be successful in this position, a candidate will need the following skills:

    • Geology: Working knowledge of geologic principles and their applications
    • Project Management: Balancing the workload and time and energy to prioritize work products.
    • Communication: Ability to clearly communicate technical concepts in written form and verbal form for various audiences


    Equivalent to those typically gained by:

    • Bachelor’s degree in geology, or closely related field and have completed, at a minimum, 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours of credit in geology including coursework required by the Missouri Board of Geologist Registration.
    • Additionally, this position requires the ability to lift 50 pounds, work alone in remote areas, walk long distances in hilly and rugged terrain, climb steep slopes, carry geologic specimens out of the field, and use shovel, hand auger, or hammer.
