    Job Description

    Court Reporter

    A position with the Missouri Judiciary provides you the opportunity to work with a variety of exceptional, hardworking people and to gain a valuable and rewarding career.     We are recruiting to fill a Court Reporter within the Missouri Judicial branch. Persons serving as official court reporter shall be an officer of the court and shall hold office at the pleasure of the judge who appoints the reporter.

    Other key responsibilities include: (The below are typical duties performed in this position. Although these examples are descriptive of duties, they are not all-inclusive and are subject to change at any time, with or without notice and will vary at the discretion of the judge)

    • Record and preserve all courtroom proceedings under the direction of the judge; attend court sessions and record full verbatim records of all oral evidence, including but not limited to objections to the admissibility of testimony, rulings of the Court and all exceptions to such rulings.
    • Preserve records (printed or electronic) utilizing accepted methods of recording, such as machine, shorthand or steno mask.
    • Transcribe record of proceedings and provide transcripts to requesting parties.
    • Perform courtroom duties, such as marking exhibits; assist judge as required; assist other divisions with court reporter duties when given approval by appointing judge.


    Desired skills and knowledge: (This job description does not include specific physical requirements necessary to perform the job, such as carrying, standing, and lifting. Such requirements vary from position to position and may be determined by the appointing authority.)

    • Advanced skill in the operation of reporting equipment and general office equipment.
    • Advanced ability to work independently with minimal supervision, maintain accurate records, and work under pressure.
    • Ability to follow both verbal and written instructions; establish and maintain effective working relationships; and maintain confidential information.
    • Ability to professionally represent the Court and adhere to professional ethics.


    Minimum qualifications: (The following statement represents the minimum education and experience that will be used to determine qualifications of applicants, provided equivalent substitution will be permitted in case of deficiencies of either experience or education. Education above the minimum stated may be substituted on a year for year basis for the required general experience; experience above the minimum stated may be substituted on a year for year basis for the required education.)

    Must be a Certified Court Report (CCR) as provided by Rule 14 of the Missouri State Supreme Court Rules.

    May also have a Registered Professional Reporter Certification but must obtain the CCR from Missouri within 24 months of employment and must maintain certification and remain in good standing.
