    Job Description

    This position will be located with the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, Missouri State Parks, and will be located at Castlewood, 1401 Kiefer Creek Road, Ballwin MO 63021. Standard work shift is 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. but will vary according to facility demands and will include working one to two weekends per month and various holidays and evenings. This position will assist at other state parks as needed.

    • Lead or participate in construction projects or facility repairs including electrical, carpentry, plumbing, painting and masonry work. Research, estimate, acquire bids and/or purchase materials for specific projects or repairs as needed.
    • Skilled work in facility maintenance, grounds maintenance, construction and repair of buildings and trail system, and routine cleaning of structures.
    • Assist with assigning tasks to and reviewing work of other maintenance staff and seasonal maintenance staff.
    • Perform, oversee and ensure completion of routine preventive maintenance and necessary repairs to vehicles, mowers, tractors, and other equipment.
    • Propose future small projects, capital improvement projects and equipment needs.
    • Planning and implementation of general cleaning and cyclical maintenance.
    • Direct and perform facility maintenance and upkeep according to facility plans, including vehicle and equipment maintenance, grounds keeping, buildings and structures maintenance, infrastructure, trails and tree trimming.
    • Purchase operating supplies, parts and project materials as necessary. Become familiar with and follow all procurement rules and procedures.
    • Assist with stewardship of resources, both natural and cultural. Participate in controlled burns, invasive plant removal and other resource management related projects.
    • Communicate openly and effectively with the public, external stakeholders, supervisors and subordinates. Provide customer service as needed, including answering public inquiries, phone calls, etc.
    • Maintain a working knowledge of park rules, regulations, procedures and policies. Attend mandatory and other trainings including overnight stays to learn new or enhance existing skills.
    • Fire Certification, S-190 or MDC Level 1, must be obtained within the first 12 months of employment.


    This position is required to obtain and maintain appropriate water/wastewater certifications, and/or other required licenses/certification. If required and if you do not currently possess this license/certification, you will be given twelve months to obtain necessary license/certification.

    To be successful in this position, a candidate will need the following skills:

    • Building and Construction: Knowledge of materials, methods, and the tools to construct objects, structures, and buildings.
    • Mechanical : Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, benefits, repair, and maintenance.
    • Electrical : Knowledge of electrical equipment, components, instruments, and systems, including their design, installation, testing, uses, repair, or maintenance.
    • Carpentry/Woodworking: Knowledge of materials, methods, and the appropriate tools to construct, install, finish, or repair wooden objects or structures.
    • Learning: Uses efficient learning techniques to acquire and apply new knowledge and skills; uses training, feedback, or other opportunities for self-learning and development.
    • Attention to Detail: Is thorough when performing work and conscientious about attending to detail.
    • Plumbing and Pipefitting : Knowledge of materials, methods, and the appropriate tools to install, maintain, or repair pipelines, pipe systems, and fixtures, including water, air, steam, gas, chemicals, or sewage.
    • Problem Solving: Identifies problems; determines accuracy and relevance of information; uses sound judgment to generate and evaluate alternatives, and to make
    • Accountability : Holds self and others accountable for measurable high-quality, timely, and cost-effective results. Determines objectives, sets priorities, and delegates work. Accepts responsibility for own actions and decisions. Complies with established control systems and rules


    Equivalent to those typically gained by:

    • Four to six years of experience in a variety of trade areas including electrical, plumbing, carpentry, concrete and masonry, painting, plastering, and mechanical repair (substitutions may be allowed)

    Preferred Qualifications and Experience/Special Job Requirements

    • Ability to operate a vehicle and maintain a valid vehicle operator’s license.
    • Work shifts will vary according to facility demands and will include working two weekends per month and various holidays.
    • Available to participate in meetings, workshops and seminars requiring overnight stays.
    • Perform strenuous physical outdoor work, able to walk on uneven terrain for extended periods of time, able to perform duties in rugged terrain, lift and load 50 to 75 pound objects repeatedly, walk and work on roofs, operate equipment for extended timeframes such as mowers, tractors, trimmers and backpack blowers and climb ladders.
