Perform a variety of maintenance work in the construction, repair and maintenance of municipal buildings, streets, parks, playgrounds, swimming pools, storm drains, airport facilities, traffic signals, street lights and utilities. Plant and maintain lawns, trees and other plant material on City property. Paint and maintain curbs, traffic lines, and street signs and posts. Load and unload leaves and rubbish from City streets, gutters and other public areas. Clean, flush and rod-out sewer. Chip brush and perform grounds maintenance work.. Cut and patch street surfaces as require Operate chipper, trucks, aerial lift truck, and other Type A, B, and C power driven equipment. Sharpen and maintain equipment. Keep manual and electronic records and make reports of supplies used, work performed. Requisition and maintain tools and equipment. Coordinate the work of other employees assigned to the job site, monitoring the consistent application of safe work practices. Perform related duties as assigned. Qualifications Knowledge of: Accepted general construction and maintenance practices; General grounds maintenance techniques; Use, maintenance and application of basic tools and equipment; Safe work practices; Principles of supervision and training; Safe and efficient operation and maintenance of power equipment, including trucks, wheel loaders, graders, street sweepers, motors, pumps, generators and related equipment; Tools, methods and materials used in street, sewer and grounds construction, maintenance and repair. Ability to: Perform heavy manual labor in varied assignments; Understand and carry out oral and written instructions; Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with those contacted in the course of work; Operate the particular type of equipment assigned; Work independently without close supervision; Understand and carry out oral and written instructions; Read and write at the level necessary to perform the above; Read and interpret construction drawings, blueprints, diagrams and sketches; Make and keep accurate records; Assist in the supervision and training of personnel as assigned; Make sound judgments of the safety and appropriate use of a variety of equipment. Education and Experience: Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be: Education : Specialized training in public works construction and maintenance work including light and moderately heavy equipment operation. Experience : One year of experience performing duties similar to those assigned to the Maintenance Worker class. Licenses and Certifications: Possession of a valid Class B California Driver License. Employees assigned to the Facilities Division are required to obtain and maintain FAA “Basic Airport Safety and Operations Specialist” certification. Desired Qualifications: Possession of a California Class A Driver License is desirable. If permanently assigned to Tree Maintenance: Under general supervision climb, trim and prune City trees. Remove trees in the streets and rights-of-way; Use hand and power chain saws, ladders, ropes, safety belts and climbing equipment Operate and maintain climbing and trimming equipment These employees are expected to perform complex skilled tree maintenance tasks, including the operation of more specialized equipment used in tree maintenance. Typical duties requires these employees to climb trees bordering City streets and rights-of-way to remove dead, injured and diseased limbs and branches or portions of trees which have been determined to be dangerous; trim and remove tree trunks and dead trees; and inspect and treat trees for disease and pests. Ability to : Climb trees with ease and work effectively in restricted or hazardous working conditions; Check and recognize defects in tree climbing and tree trimming equipment; Employees permanently assigned to tree maintenance must obtain an International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) Tree Worker Certification, and Electrical Hazards Awareness Program (EHAP) certificate, within six months of appointment. Desired Qualifications: Four years of experience in trimming and maintaining a variety of large trees; and specialized training in tree maintenance including operation of specialized tree trimming equipment; Knowledge of accepted tree trimming and practices; and the full range of tree types within the City of Chico and methods of care for each. Possession of an ISA Arborist Certification is desirable. If permanently assigned to Traffic Signals: Repair knockdowns to traffic signal equipment including poles, signal heads, and hardware; Assist with the direction and training of traffic signal technical and maintenance personnel; Inspect, diagnose malfunctions of, and make field repairs to traffic signal controls and auxiliary equipment; Make signal timing changes as directed and ensure that proper timing is restored after repairs have been made; Install all or part of signalized intersections; Investigate complaints and reports of signal malfunctions and perform adjustment or repairs; Repair, replace, or modify signal head components, microprocessors, relays, switches, fuses, and cabinet parts; Install various types of vehicle detection. Including, but not limited to loops, camera systems, wireless and microwave detectors; Inspect and test equipment installed by contractors; Prepare and read blueprints and electrical diagrams; Plan and conduct scheduled preventative maintenance on traffic signals, signal devices and related equipment; Use a laptop to install and modify traffic signal equipment; Assist in inspection of traffic signal installations for compliance with applicable codes and standards. Licenses and Certifications: Employees permanently assigned to the Traffic Signals must possess and maintain an International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) Traffic Signal Field Technician level I certification. Employees must possess and maintain an International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) Traffic Signal Field Technician level II, within two years of appointment.
