    Job Summary

    Are you a current college student with an interest in an Emergency Management career?

    The Olathe Fire Department’s paid summer intern program is a great way for you to gain knowledge, training and experience related to your future career. During this ten-week internship you’ll have the opportunity to learn about the City of Olathe’s Emergency Management program. You will support the planning and collaboration needed to improve the City’s ability to prepare for, respond to, mitigate and recover from significant emergencies of all types including severe weather, acts of terrorism, and others. This internship will be based in the City’s Emergency Operations Center.

    If you want to learn more about disaster planning, are a self-starter, have strong interpersonal skills, can maintain a high level of professionalism, and can work well independently and as part of a team, apply today.

    Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm with some evening and/or weekend activities.

    It is the intent of the OFD to make this opportunity available to as many people as possible. First-time candidates will be given preference over previous OFD interns.

    If selected for this internship you will be required to complete a background check.

    Qualifications

    Experience: Previous exposure to the emergency management field along with excellent communication and writing skills are required.

    Education: A high school diploma or equivalent is required. Current undergraduate or graduate students and recent graduates will be considered. College coursework in emergency management, disaster/crisis planning, or a related field is preferred.

    Licenses & Certifications: A valid driver’s license and favorable driving record are preferred.

    The Olathe Fire Department (OFD) Intern works closely with various sections and programs which may include fire operations, special operations, Emergency Medical Services, public education, fire prevention, emergency management, and homeland security. Interns will have the opportunity to gain knowledge, training, and experience related to the fire service. Interns may participate in a research project and presentation as part of a team. Interns may be assigned to a specific program for the length of the internship.

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
    • Collaborates with staff on various projects and programs
    • Shares key safety and preparedness messages with the public in a variety of settings
    • Builds relationships that foster continued collaboration with community groups
    • Research and supports projects, tasks, or plans related to a specific program
