    The Elections Division of the County Clerk-Recorder's Office is gearing up for the June 2, 2026, Primary Election and is seeking to fill 100 temporary Extra Help positions to support elections that service every voter in Ventura County across all 10 cities.

    As an Elections Worker, you will provide records management support such as ballot processing, voter registration assistance and ballot pick ups at drop box locations. This assignment offers meaningful public service experience, flexible durations, and the opportunity to work as part of a fast paced, mission driven team.

    Depending upon voter turnout and job assignment, terms of employment may range from several weeks to several months depending on the operational needs.

    Extra help employees are hired to perform temporary work and are paid on an hourly basis. They work on call, which means that their work hours may vary from day to day, and they may need to work various shifts, on evenings and weekends. Hours are driven by the Elections Division workload and may be less than 8 hours/day.

    Extra help employees are not regular county employees and are not eligible for county benefits. Additionally, extra help employees are limited to working a maximum of 720 hours per fiscal year, which runs from July 1 to June 30.

    Distinguishing Characteristics:

    This classification is used to fill temporary assignments during local, state, and federal elections.

    PAYROLL TITLES AND APPROXIMATE SALARIES:

    Elections Worker I: $22.50 Hourly

    Elections Worker II: $25.50 Hourly

    These classifications are pending Board approval.

    AGENCY/DEPARTMENT: County Clerk-Recorder, Elections Division

    The eligible list established from this recruitment will be used to fill current temporary/intermittent positions as well as future Extra Help vacancies. There are currently 100 vacancies in the Elections Division, depending on operational needs.

    TENTATIVE SCHEDULE:

    Opening Date: Monday, February 2, 2026

    Closing Date: Continuous and may close at any time; therefore, the schedule for the remainder of the process will depend upon when we receive a sufficient number of qualified applications to meet business needs.

    Examples Of Duties

    Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

    Elections Worker I
    • Operates a variety of automated office equipment.
    • Performs clerical duties, data entry, and voter look-up in the Elections Division office.
    • Assists voters with disabilities, determining how and when to assist voters with specific needs.
    • Opens/flattens/processes ballots.
    • Opens and verifies the vote center daily ballot bags and prepare for tabulation.
    • Works the in-office call center.
    • Adjudicates and duplicates ballots.
    • Picks up ballots at drop box locations and delivers ballots to the Elections office following two-person custody requirements.
    • Help resolve complaints and issues.
    • Performs other duties as required.

    Elections Worker II (in addition to performing Elections Worker I duties):
    • Assists in scheduling and coordinating placement of vote center workers at assigned locations.
    • Assists voters with voter registration; process and validate Voter Registration forms and Vote by Mail data.
    • Assists and collaborates with trainers to ensure effective training of vote center staff.
    • Assists in the coordination and proper organization of all vote center facilities.
    • Assists voters and the public, both in person and over the phone, to provide voter information, address questions, and resolve complaints.
    • Provides guidance to the public and representatives from outside agencies in completing forms and explaining rules, regulations, and procedures.
    • Sorts and/or files materials such as correspondence, contract documents, and voter information; maintains files; conducts systematic search for misplaced materials; maintains cross-reference files or indices; purges filing systems as necessary.
    • Compiles routine reports and records by extracting and/or tabulating information from a variety of sources, such as files, correspondence, meeting notes, logs, previous reports, and/or verbal instruction.
    • Transfers professional and technical instructions to project or voter files; researches reference materials to respond to voters or co-worker inquiries.
    • Coordinates ballot pick-up throughout the County.
    • Delivers ballots and other required materials from the vote centers, throughout the County, to the Elections office.
    • Processes election ballots & assist with manual tally process.
    • May be assigned to a vote center and/or other office work areas.
    • May perform equipment/system maintenance checks.
    • Use computerized equipment to produce routine reports, correspondence, or forms; enters, updates, and/or extracts stored information using such equipment.


    Typical Qualifications

    These are entrance requirements to the examination process and assure neither continuance in the process nor placement on an eligible list.

    EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

    Elections Worker I

    Any combination of education, training, experience equivalent to six (6) months of clerical experience.

    Organizational, public speaking, and customer service skills desired.

    Elections Worker II

    Any combination of education, training, experience equivalent to eighteen (18) months of clerical experience.

    Must have organizational, public speaking, and customer service skills.

    NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

    • Incumbents must be able to work flexible hours: early start time, overtime, evenings, holidays, and weekends with little notice and as needed.
    • Be willing and able to perform routine and repetitive tasks which may include sitting or standing for long periods of time.
    • Must be willing and able to work in the Elections Division office and vote center locations throughout Ventura County.
    • Must possess or be eligible to obtain and maintain a valid California driver’s license.


    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
    Some (I) to thorough (II) knowledge of: modern office methods and practices; record maintenance systems; letter writing and report compilation and public contact techniques.

    Working (I) to considerable (II) knowledge of: the operations, procedures and practices used in support of the function to which assigned; techniques to expedite or improve clerical tasks and record processing; correct English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation.

    Working skills: depending on assignment, incumbents may be required to demonstrate a certain prescribed proficiency in typing or equivalent word processing/data entry and/or taking/transcribing dictation.

    Working (I) to thorough (II) ability to: perform and coordinate moderately difficult and responsible clerical work with little or no direct supervision; set up and maintain records and filing systems; extract information from a variety of sources; operate a variety of automated office equipment; accurately perform and proof the transfer of information from one document to another; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships; understand, follow and convey written and verbal directions.
