    Job Summary:

    The purpose of this position is to perform routine maintenance of scientific equipment and provide comprehensive support services to the Department of Physics and Astronomy and the Department of Geology, which makes extensive use of materials, supplies and equipment in laboratories, instructional courses and field trips.

    Responsibilities:

    Prepare, set up and disassemble materials necessary to perform laboratory experiments and classroom demonstrations for Physics, Astronomy and Geology courses. In consultation with faulty, design equipment configurations and procedures for experiments and demonstrations. Work with faculty and staff to ensure equipment and facilities are utilized efficiently, effectively, and properly. Work with EHS to properly store and dispose of hazardous materials.

    Maintain, repair, and make modifications to equipment. This includes, testing, adjustments, calibration, and general maintenance. Check laboratory equipment for proper operation before each lab. Assist faculty in the use of a variety of equipment, materials, and supplies. And, when necessary, assist Observatory consultant and CNS Equipment Tech with Observatory and departmental instrumentation maintenance.

    Order, receive, catalog, and store supplies, materials and equipment; maintain inventory, ensuring that adequate quantities are available for timely use. Organize and maintain departmental collections and displays of rocks, minerals, maps and fossils. Provide technical assistance in the preparation of specifications for equipment and material purchases. Provide coordination of the Geology rock shed and the Physics stockroom.

    Provide coordination of department and laboratory safety reporting and compliance requirements based on federal and state safety regulations. Observe appropriate safety procedures and provide instruction in the work area to faculty, staff and students. Develop and maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs) for laboratory operations.

    Support the planning and logistics of field trips and coordinate the scheduling and upkeep of department vehicles.

    Perform classification related additional tasks in support of departmental instructional operations, including assisting with events, facilities maintenance, or equipment upgrades as assigned.

    Minimum Qualifications:
    • Equivalent to three years of experience providing instructional support services for a related unit or discipline, or in producing materials or supplies or repairing equipment in a discipline related to the area to which assigned.

    OR
    • Equivalent to two years of college with 16 semester units in courses involving extensive use of materials, supplies, or equipment and in a discipline related to the area may be substituted for one year of the required experience.

    OR
    • Equivalent to four years of college with 16 semester units in courses involving extensive use of materials, supplies, or equipment and in a discipline related to the area to which assigned may be substituted for two years of the required experience.

    Required Qualifications:
    • Knowledge of the principles of performing support services.
    • Knowledge of the principles, methods, and techniques related to the discipline and their curriculum.
    • Knowledge of the materials and supplies in the discipline curriculum and their uses.
    • Ability to plan, organize, and schedule activities
    • Ability to operate technical equipment related to the discipline.
    • Ability to maintain records
    • Ability to adjust and perform simple maintenance of technical and scientific equipment.

    Preferred Qualifications:
    • Experience working in an academic department in higher education.
    • B.S. Degree in Physics
    • Knowledge of the principles, methods, and techniques related to Geology and Physics and their curriculum.
    • Knowledge of the materials and supplies in the Geology and Physics curriculum and their uses.
    • Ability to operate technical equipment related to Physics and Geology.
    • Ability to adjust and perform basic/common maintenance of technical and scientific equipment.
    • Ability to communicate with constituents in a professional and respectful manner.
    • Ability to complete and pass the CSUSB Defensive Driver Certification.


    Compensation and Benefits:

    The salary offered will take into account internal equity and experience among other factors.

    Initial salary step placement will be Step 1-Step 3 ($4,595-$4,780/month) for qualified candidates.

    CSU Classification Salary Step Range: $4,595 - $6,694 per month (Step 1 - Step 20)

    The CSU system provides a comprehensive benefit package that includes medical, dental and vision plans, membership in the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS), sick and vacation time, and 15 paid holidays a year.     Position Information:

    Full-time Non-Exempt Probationary

    Academic year schedule: Monday through Friday (8:00 am - 5:00 pm), some evenings/weekends.

    Summer schedule: Monday through Thursday (7:00 am - 5:30 pm), some evenings/weekends.

    Background Check

    Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.

    Drivers License Check

    Possession of a valid Driver's License is required. Employees in this position will be enrolled in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Government Employer Pull Notice Program which confirms possession of a valid driver's license and reflects driving record.

    Mandated Reporter

    The person holding this position is considered a `mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.
