DescriptionCharleston County is seeking a skilled and experienced Heavy Equipment and Truck Mechanic who is also capable of operating all types of equipment. The ideal candidate will work at two designated sites and will report directly to the Department Director, collaborating closely with the County Fleet Department while maintaining independence from their oversight.
HIRING HOURLY RANGE: $29.50 - $36.00OPEN UNTIL FILLED - APPLICATION REVIEW BEGINS IMMEDIATELYDuties and ResponsibilitiesKey Responsibilities:•Operate various types of heavy equipment as needed.
•Communicate effectively with the Department Director regarding repairs and maintenance needs.
•Provide updates on equipment performance and recommend improvements.
•Maintenance and Repairs: Performing routine maintenance, inspections, and repairs on heavy equipment and trucks to ensure they operate efficiently and safely.
•Diagnostic Testing: Using diagnostic tools and equipment to identify mechanical issues and troubleshooting problems in various systems, including engines, transmissions, hydraulics, and electrical systems.
•Parts Replacement: Replacing worn or damaged parts, such as brakes, tires, batteries, and filters, ensuring that all repairs are carried out to manufacturer's specifications.
•Safety Compliance: Adhering to safety protocols and regulations while performing work to prevent accidents and injuries, including wearing appropriate personal protective equipment.
•Record Keeping: Maintaining detailed records of maintenance and repairs, including parts used, labor hours, and costs associated with each job.
•Equipment Operation: Operating heavy equipment and trucks as needed for testing or during repairs, ensuring familiarity with all equipment functions and capabilities.
•Collaboration: Working closely with other mechanics, equipment operators, and the departmental leadership to address issues and optimize equipment performance.
•Documentation: Keeping up to date with service manuals and industry standards, as well as recommending equipment improvements and upgrades.
•Problem-Solving: Analyzing complex mechanical issues and developing effective solutions to ensure minimal downtime of equipment.
•Emergency Repairs: Responding to breakdowns and providing emergency repair services as needed to ensure the equipment is back in operation quickly.
These responsibilities necessitate a combination of technical expertise, problem-solving skills, and attention to detail to ensure that heavy machinery and trucks are functioning properly
Minimum Qualifications•Proven experience as a mechanic for heavy equipment and trucks.
•Must possess a valid driver’s license and a clean driving record.
•Must own necessary tools for performing repairs and maintenance.
•Documented certifications in relevant fields are a plus.
•Ability to operate heavy equipment safely and efficiently.
•Must have a CDL.
Working Conditions:•Must be willing to work overtime as needed.
•A work truck will be provided and must be left at the work site after shifts.
•When possible, the equipment will be in an enclosed area.
•Situations will require that the work is done where the equipment is down.
