The Position Environmental Scientists perform program research, planning and development, permitting, compliance monitoring, inspections/enforcement, and technical support services in relation to air, water, waste, federal facilities, corrective action, mining, biology and other environmental programs.
Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform advanced-level work and may provide work direction and training to others.
The Environmental Scientist (ES) will perform program research, planning and development, compliance monitoring, inspections/enforcement, and technical and project management support services for both the Superfund and the Abandoned Mine Lands (AML) Branches of BCA. The ES will make use of general and specific knowledge, skills and abilities with field sampling equipment and technologies. Both branches will rely on the ES's strong organizational skills and ability to work in a team environment and communicate effectively verbally and in writing with other BCA staff, other agencies, the regulated community, private property owners, stakeholders, and the public. The successful candidate will demonstrate an ability to work safely, independently, and effectively in adverse field conditions while performing technical tasks. This position involves making consistent, defensible, and timely decisions using sound judgement skills. This ES will review remedial design plans and oversee remedial actions at various sites throughout Nevada. This position also functions as data management and database support. The candidate will be able to document a clear understanding of basic scientific principles related to hydrology, geology, and environmental remediation technologies. This position may also serve as a mentor to junior staff or interns in the future. The ES may be expected to give technical presentations and be able to effectively communicate technical subject matter, to a wide variety of audiences. The ES must be willing to take on new tasks, and/or respond to environmental releases that threaten human health or the environment.

Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications) Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in the physical, natural resource or life sciences, engineering or closely related field and three years of professional environmental experience which involved environmental program research and planning; OR graduation from high school or equivalent and five years of professional environmental experience as described above; OR one year of experience as an Environmental Scientist II in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above. Special Requirements This position has a 25% travel requirement. A valid driver's license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment. The Examination Application Evaluation Exam The exam will consist of an application evaluation. It is essential that applications include detailed information with time frames regarding education and experience. The most qualified applicants will be contacted by the hiring agency for interview.
