The Marin County Sheriff's Office: The Marin County Sheriff's Office is committed to partnering with our communities to provide leadership and excellence in public safety. The department is divided into three major bureaus; Administrative and Support Services, Detention Services, and Field Services in addition to operating the countywide Special Enforcement Unit. ABOUT THE POSITIONUnder the general supervision of the Administrative Services Associate, the Accounting Technician’s focus will be providing technical and complex fiscal and clerical support to the Sheriff’s Office Fiscal Services. Some duties may include:
- Processing complicated payroll
- Processing Accounts Payables and Receivables for various divisions
- Processing FMLA and other HR leaves
- Reconciling reports from a variety of different systems
Most work is performed on the computer using a variety of databases which include Outlook, Excel, MUNIS ERP, ExecuTime, and Google. Advanced knowledge of Excel is required. While knowledge of other systems is highly desirable and not required, the ability to learn new computer systems quickly, successfully enter data accurately, and extract data efficiently from several systems is essential.
There is currently one (1) full time (37.5 hours per week) regular hire Accounting Technician position within the Sheriff’s Office. This is an on-site position, Monday through Friday schedule, reporting at 1600 Los Gamos, San Rafael.

ABOUT YOUOur Highly Qualified Candidate: is a reliable, detail-oriented self-starter who can work both independently and as a team member to achieve our department’s goals. We are looking for someone who is able to maintain accurate records, analyze data, prepare accurate reports, and be proficient with spreadsheets, and has experience working with varied financial transactions including compiling and reconciling complex financial data. The successful candidate will be organized, dependable, flexible and customer-focused with the ability to schedule and execute tasks effectively under fast-paced conditions. Proficiency with Munis or other large automated financial systems is also highly desirable.
QUALIFICATIONSKnowledge of:- Principles and practices of accounting and financial record keeping and report preparation.
- Principles and practices of auditing and reconciling a variety of financial and accounting documents and records.
- Computer applications related to the work, including word processing, spreadsheet and data base applications.
- Procedures, terminology and forms related to the functional area(s) to which assigned.
- Standard office practices and procedures, including the operation of standard office equipment.
- Basic budgetary principles and terminology.
- Business arithmetic.
Ability to:- Perform specialized and complex accounting, financial and/or budgetary support work
- Prepare a variety of complex financial, accounting and statistical reports, journals and ledgers.
- Review, audit and reconcile financial, accounting and budgetary documents and records.
- Enter a variety of information into automated financial, accounting and statistical reporting systems.
- Interpret, understand and explain complex accounting and financial policies, procedures and transactions.
- Conduct accounting, financial and budgetary research.
- Make accurate financial and statistical calculations.
- Prepare accurate and timely billings and reports.
- Organize own work, setting priorities and meeting critical deadlines.
- Provide lead direction to staff on a day-to-day or project basis.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of the work.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Typically, equivalent to completion of two (2) years of college (60 semester or 90 quarter units) with major course work in accounting, bookkeeping or a field related to the work
AND two (2) years of accounting or financial office support experience. Additional experience as outlined above may be substituted for the required education on a year for year basis.

Drug Use Standards: No use of illegal drugs within the timelines described in the Pre-Employment Drug Use Guidelines . Applicants successful in testing will be given a polygraph examination and/or computerized voice stress analysis and will be asked about illegal drug use.
Personal Appearance Standards - Tattoos: No tattoo or body art that is offensive, demeaning, or prejudicial to good order shall be visible. Examples of offensive tattoos include but are not limited to those that exhibit or advocate discrimination, those that exhibit gang, supremacist, or extremist group affiliation, and those that depict or promote drug use, sexually explicit acts, or other obscene material. The appropriateness of tattoos as defined by the policy shall remain at the sole discretion of the Sheriff or designee.
Disaster Service Workers: All County of Marin employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employment with the County requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.
