    Description

    The City of Irvine is seeking a seasoned professional to serve as a Senior Traffic Engineer in the Traffic Management Center, in the Public Works & Sustainability Department. This position will supervise the division and manage the traffic signal network by developing signal synchronization plans and traffic policies for signalized intersections throughout the City.

    This position requires a valid California driver's license and registration as an Engineer in the state of California.

    This recruitment will establish an eligibility list for the Senior Transportation Engineer position, which will expire on December 15, 2026.

    Your Impact
    • Oversee the Traffic Management Center, refinement of the traffic management system, including working with engineering software to develop traffic flow/safety improvement plans, including signal phasing and timing; along with utilizing intelligent transportation systems.
    • Oversee complex transportation capital improvement projects and ensure compliance with federal, state, and local standards.
    • Prepare and manage the Traffic Management Center budget and monitor expenditures.
    • Develop partnerships with neighboring agencies for grant applications, mutual aid, and improving traffic flow.
    • Represent the department in working with elected officials, appointees, Public Safety, consultants, and legal advisors, including attorney requests.
    • Prepare written memos, reports, and presentations for the City Council and Transportation Commissions.
    • Manage and oversee staff responsible for daily operations in the Traffic Management Center.

    Minimum Qualifications
    • Bachelor's degree in engineering.
    • Five years of professional experience or any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills and abilities.
    • A valid California driver's license
    • Registration as an Engineer in the state of California is required.
    Best Fit
    • Five years of experience working in a Traffic Management Center with two years of supervisory experience is highly desirable.
    • Working knowledge of critical regulations and standards at the local, state, and federal levels, such as the City of Irvine Design Manual, California Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, California Department of Transportation regulations, and Federal Highway Administration.
    • Experience with designing and managing projects including budgeting, plans, specifications, and estimates.
    • Ability to foster and develop high-performing teams and a positive work environment.
    • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to communicate effectively with all levels of City staff and external partners such as contract vendors and members of the public.
    • Ability to adapt, seek opportunities for improvement, and implement change effectively.
    • Proven track record of situational awareness, good use of judgment, and demonstration of exceptional customer service.

    The Public Works & Sustainability Department combines the strengths of Administration & Planning, Park Development, Transportation Planning & Mobility, Infrastructure Maintenance & Operations, Capital Project Delivery, and Sustainability & Environmental Programs to create a unified approach to infrastructure management and sustainability. City assets include streetscapes, open space, City parks (community and neighborhood), athletic fields, bike trails, roadways, traffic signals, and more. The Capital Improvement Program has an annual delivery of $100 million in capital projects, in addition to the delivery of the globally relevant Great Park.
