    The LA County Board of Supervisors has unanimously ratified a Proclamation of Local Emergency in response to the windstorms and wildfires , including the Palisades and Eaton Fires, that have devastated communities across the County. We are looking for qualified and passionate individuals to assist the County in mobilizing resources and support needed to help our residents recover and rebuild.     The Los Angeles County Fire Department is seeking qualified candidates to fill emergency Career Development Intern - Wildland Fire Firefighting Support vacancies related to this unprecedented natural disaster.

    Under the emergency order, applicants who meet the requirements may be hired for an initial period of up to 90 days, with an opportunity for permanent County employment.

    During your initial work period, you will be assessed on your work performance. This assessment will be weighted 100%.

    Those who successfully pass the assessment will be considered for permanent appointment to Career Development Intern - Wildland Fire Firefighting Support .

    Essential Job Functions

    • Assists in clearing firebreaks, trails, and motorways by cutting back brush or trees with hand tools; and may participate in other preventive measures, such as prescribed burns.
    • Assists engine companies in laying hose lines used to suppress wildland fires; and assists with patrolling areas of controlled fires to discover and extinguish any remaining burning materials.
    • Assists with manual labor at other types of emergencies, such as filling and placing sandbags, or digging canals.
    • Assists with various support duties, such as clerical tasks, small equipment repair and maintenance, sewing, moving furniture, assisting with special departmental events, washing helicopters, or other vehicle maintenance duties.
    • Drives automotive equipment to and from work sites in the performance of duties, as needed.
    • Assists with defensible space inspections, home hardening inspections, and fuel modification inspections, as needed.
    • Assists in fuel modifications, as needed.


    Requirements

    REQUIREMENTS TO QUALIFY
    Completion of the Los Angeles County Justice, Care, and Opportunity Department’s (JCOD’s) Los Angeles County Training Center (LACTC) wildland firefighting program.

    • Applicants MUST be able to perform the essential functions of this classification, with or without a reasonable accommodation.

    LICENSE
    Some assignments may require a valid California Class C Driver License to perform job-related essential duties, or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.

    PHYSICAL CLASS
    Physical Class IV - Arduous: This class involves frequent heavy lifting over 25 pounds, often combined with bending, twisting, or working above ground on irregular surfaces. It includes those positions that occasionally demand extraordinary physical activity such as those in Safety positions.

    Career Development Interns who perform moderate or arduous physical tasks as described in the Examples of Duties will be required to pass a Class 3 - Moderate or Class 4 - Arduous Physical examination.

    EXAM CONTENT
    During your initial work period, the appointing department will evaluate your performance. Those who achieve a passing score on this evaluation will be considered for permanent appointment.
