    Job Classification: Medical Assistant

    Anticipated Hiring Range: $3,776 - $4,253

    Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 8 am - 5 pm

    *Hiring for 2 openings

    THE DEPARTMENT:

    Student Health Services, is one component of the Campus Health and Wellbeing Cluster within the Division of Student Affairs. This new cluster stresses the University's commitment to preventative and holistic approaches to wellbeing in support of students and the institution's mission and strategic plan. The mission of Student Health Services is to promote students' healthy lifestyles and academic success by providing quality medical, psychological, and wellness services. The department provides ambulatory health care, health education programs, prevention and healing services to students of Cal Poly Pomona

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Clinical & Patient Care
    • Coordinate patient flow, including escorting students to exam rooms and preparing them for examinations or treatments.
    • Collect, record, and monitor patient data such as height, weight, temperature, blood pressure, pulse, and other vital signs.
    • Document patient history, medications, allergies, and chief complaints in the EMR.
    • Maintain exam and treatment rooms, including cleaning, disinfecting, stocking, and preparing necessary equipment and supplies.
    • Provide patient education by reinforcing provider instructions and supporting student understanding of care plans.

    Procedures & Technical Services
    • Perform phlebotomy (skin puncture or venipuncture) for clinical testing.
    • Administer medications and immunizations via approved routes (IM, intradermal, subcutaneous, oral, inhalation, sublingual, etc.) only after dosage verification by a licensed professional.
    • Perform point-of-care testing and technical services for which training has been provided, including but not limited to: • Vision screening and audiometric testing • Electrocardiograms (ECGs) • Peak flow and spirometry testing • Pulse oximetry • TB skin testing (placement, measurement, referral for interpretation) • Specimen collection (throat swabs, urine, other non-invasive samples) • Specimen preparation for CLIA-waived testing • Other point-of-care procedures that may be added to Student Health Services in the future

    Administrative, Compliance & Professional Standards
    • Provide patient reception services by creating a welcoming, helpful, and caring rapport during all student interactions.
    • Support clinic administrative functions, including appointment scheduling, check-in/check-out, reception, and processing of medical and insurance documents as needed.
    • Ensure patient privacy, safety, and confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA, FERPA, and university policies.
    • Assist in ordering and tracking medical supplies.
    • Follow emergency protocols and assist in crisis response within scope of training.
    • As assigned, provide non-licensed support for other SHS areas such as pharmacy, laboratory, radiology, or health education.
    • Adhere to university and Student Health Services (SHS) policies and procedures.
    • Keep current with the medical assisting field and maintain competencies relevant to the role and scope of practice.
    • Perform other related duties within the scope of practice as defined by the Medical Board of California.
    • Demonstrate professionalism, patient-centered service, and cultural sensitivity in a diverse student population.

    QUALIFICATIONS:
    • High School Diploma/GED - or equivalent
    • PHEL - Phelobotomy Trained Certified Phlebotomy Technician I (Collect and process specimens via phlebotomy including venipuncture and capillary puncture and perform basic and CLIA-waived testing).
    • Or combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge and abilities.
    • While Medical Assistants are not certified, registered, or licensed in the State of California, the Medical Board of California requires that medical assistants complete specific types and hours of training to perform the duties outlined in their scope of practice. This training must be documented and a physician or other qualified teacher, as identified by the Medical Board of California, must certify in writing that the Medical Assistant has completed the training successfully. CSU-specific requirements are as follows: 1. Most common, incumbents are required to possess a certificate of completion from an accredited and approved medical assisting program through the Department of Education or Bureau for Private Postsecondary Education within the Department of Consumer Affairs. In this case, the supervising CSU physician must verify competencies. OR 2. At the discretion of the student health center director, an in-house campus-training program may be developed according to the guidelines established by the Medical Board of California. In this case, a CSU physician must document and certify in writing that the formal training and clinical practice hours required by the Medical Board of California to perform the duties of a Medical Assistant have been completed successfully. NOTE: If a Medical Assistant is performing phlebotomy outside the regular scope of practice, appropriate phlebotomy certification may be required by the State of California. and
    • In addition to those of the Clinical Assistant, possess working knowledge of daily clinic operations; aseptic techniques and requirements; uses, application, and proper operation of various medical supplies and equipment used in performing the duties described above; California laws and regulations pertaining to medical assistants. General knowledge of anatomy and physiology appropriate to the duties assigned; understand the potential hazards or complications resulting from administering medications and how to initiate emergency procedures. In addition to those of the Clinical Assistant, ability to demonstrate the proper techniques in administering medications in a variety of manners including intramuscular, intradermal, or subcutaneous methods and by inhalation; proper techniques in performing injections and phlebotomy; competency in performing assigned medical technical support services such as the standard tests and limited procedures described above; maintain effective working relationships with practitioners and other health center support staff; and be sensitive to and communicate effectively with diverse patients.


    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
    • High school diploma or equivalent.
    • Certificate of completion from an accredited and approved medical assistant training program.
    • One year of increasingly responsible Medical Assistant back and front office experience in an ambulatory setting, hospital, or physician's office.
    • Possess and maintain valid certification as a Certified Phlebotomy Technician I (Collect and process specimens via phlebotomy including venipuncture and capillary puncture and perform basic and CLIA-waived testing).

    Background Check

    CSU Classification Salary Range

    This position is part of the CSUEU bargaining unit 2. The CSU Classification Standards for this position are located on the CSU Classification Standards website . The CSU Salary Schedule is located on the CSU Salary Schedule website . The classification salary range for this position according to the respective skill level is: minimum $3,147 and maximum $4,406 per month. Please refer to the anticipated hiring range for the appropriate salary rate for this particular position.

    University Driving Requirement

    Positions that require driving for university business by using a personal or state vehicle must comply with the Authorized University Driver Policy. Driving records are monitored and evaluated by the Risk Management Department. The Risk Management Department evaluates a good driving report based on the following criteria. The driver must: 1. Have a valid California or other State Driver’s license. 2. Have no more than 3 motor vehicle violations or been the cause of 3 accidents in a 12-month period (or any combination of 3 thereof) 3. Not have more than 3 DMV Points, if their license is Class C or, 4. Not have more than 5 DMV Points, if their license is Class A, B, or C with endorsements.
