    Essential Job Functions

    General Maintenance Worker typically work under the supervision of a Senior General Maintenance Worker or General Maintenance Supervisor and are responsible for performing a wide variety of general building maintenance and minor repair work involving carpentry, electrical, masonry, painting, plumbing or other mechanical and maintenance skills. Incumbents are required to utilize functional skills in all of these areas.

    Requirements

    Requirements to Qualify

    Two years of experience performing general building maintenance and minor repair work* in at least two (2) of the following areas: carpentry, electrical, masonry, painting, or plumbing.

    Special Requirement Information

    *General building maintenance and minor repair work involves small-scale maintenance, installation, and repair tasks across various trades to maintain functionality and safety of facilities. This includes carpentry work such as building, repairing, or maintaining wooden structures and fixtures; electrical work like inspecting, repairing, or replacing switches, outlets, and lighting components; masonry work involving patching, resurfacing, and restoring concrete, brick, or asphalt areas; painting tasks such as preparing and refinishing interior and exterior surfaces for protection and appearance; and plumbing repairs including fixing leaks, unclogging drains, and replacing fixtures or fittings. These tasks are typically limited in scope, do not involve major reconstruction, and are performed using hand, power, or pneumatic tools in compliance with safety and building standards.

    License
    A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.

    Physical Class III
    Moderate: This class requires that the incumbent stand or walk most of the time with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, reaching, working on irregular surfaces, occasional lifting of objects weighing over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds.

    This examination will consist of multiple-choice and/or simulation assessment(s), weighted 100%, assessing:

    Applicants must meet the requirements and receive a passing score of 70% or higher on the assessment to be added to the list.

    Exam Review
    Some exam components are not subject to review by candidates. Multiple-choice and/or simulation assessments are not reviewable by candidates per Civil Service Rule 7.19.

    Transfer of Examination Component

    • Applicants who are concurrently applying to Senior General Maintenance Worker (Exam No. R6622L-R) and/or General Maintenance Supervisor (Exam No. R6625J-R) will take the identical test parts one time only.
    • Applicants who have taken identical components recently for other exams may have their responses automatically transferred to this examination.
    • This examination contains test components that may be used in the future for new examinations, and your test responses may be transferred.

    We provide study guides and other test preparation resources to help candidates prepare for employment tests. While the guides may help in preparing for the test, we recommend reviewing all related materials that seem necessary.

    Eligibility and Vacancy Information

    Applicants who passed the assessment are placed on an eligible list in the order of their score group for a period of six (6) months. We will use the eligible list to fill vacancies throughout Los Angeles County as they occur.
