Nevada stands at a generational crossroads for public education.
With historic investments, clear legislative direction, and a
shared commitment to ensuring every child can build a bright
future, the state is poised to deliver transformational results for
students. The Deputy Superintendent for Academics & Student
Achievement will help lead this next chapter, strengthening
foundational literacy and numeracy, equipping students with
durable skills, expanding pathways to college and career, and
making Nevada a national model for how public education drives
economic mobility and community vitality.
The Deputy Superintendent for Academics & Student Achievement
provides statewide leadership to elevate instructional excellence and
drive student success across Nevada. Serving as the chief architect of the
state's instructional system, this cabinet-level role aligns standards,
curriculum, assessment, and school supports around a single goal:
ensuring every student receives high-quality Tier 1 instruction every day.
Reporting directly to the State Superintendent, the Deputy
Superintendent advances a bold vision for student achievement-
improving outcomes for all students, with a focus on those furthest from
opportunity. The role leads Nevada's instructional strategy by ensuring
every school implements rigorous, standards-aligned instruction
supported by strong materials, effective professional learning, and
district-level capacity building. Additionally, the Deputy Superintendent
builds and oversees a high-performing team responsible for curriculum
and instruction, assessment and accountability, student and school
supports, early learning, and inclusive education.
The ideal candidate will have a proven record of improving student outcomes at the classroom,
school, or system level, supported by at least eight years of leadership in K-12 education. They
should have experience driving instructional or school-improvement initiatives, implementing
high-quality materials and standards-aligned professional development, and managing large
budgets and multi-office teams. Strong knowledge of ESSA, IDEA, and Nevada education
statutes is essential. Candidates should bring substantial practitioner experience-as a teacher
and instructional or school leader, or equivalent work improving outcomes at scale. A relevant
master's or doctoral degree is preferred, or an equivalent mix of education and experience.
Set a bold statewide strategy for high-quality,
standards-aligned instruction.
Recruit, develop, and lead a high-performing team
across curriculum, assessment, school improvement,
early learning, and student supports.
Drive the statewide High-Quality Instructional
Materials (HQIM) strategy in literacy, mathematics,
and science.
Build aligned systems of professional learning and
coaching in partnership with the Education Service
Center and external experts.
Strengthen continuous-improvement and
intervention practices using data to accelerate
outcomes for students furthest from opportunity.
Partner with higher education, workforce, and
community leaders to connect strong instruction to
long-term student readiness.
Lead key NDE academic initiatives before the
Legislature, State Board of Education, and public
forums.
Align and manage state and federal funds to advance
strategic priorities.
Up to $151,902 plus benefits (reflects
the Employer/Employee PERS
contribution option)
