    Essential Duties
    • Basic custodial cleaning and maintenance for two of the largest event locations in the South Sound Area
    • Sweeping, mopping and polishing floors
    • Dusting and cleaning offices.
    • Washing windows, woodwork and walls
    • Cleaning restrooms, plumbing fixtures and glass
    • Replenishing supplies and keeping storage closets organized
    • Emptying and cleaning trash cans and ashtrays
    • Moving furniture, equipment and risers
    • Polishing stainless steel
    • Assist in the set-up and tear-down of tables, chairs, risers, stages and other related equipment associated with the various facilities
    • Operate a variety of tools, equipment, and machinery such as electric carts, and floor scrubbers, and carpet cleaning equipment
    • May provide work direction to part-time or temporary workers or oversee event operations
    • Assist in routine maintenance and care for parking lots, grounds, lawn, and landscaping
    • Related duties as assigned

    Qualifications

    High School graduation or equivalent and one year of professional custodial work.

    LICENSES, CERTIFICATES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS
    CPR/First Aid certification prior to the end of probation with maintenance thereafter.
    Some positions in this class may require a valid Washington Driver's License at time of appointment with maintenance thereafter.

    Working Conditions
    Work is performed in indoor and outdoor environments at multiple sport and entertainment venues and is subject to adverse weather conditions, fumes/chemicals, lifting up to 75 pounds, standing, walking, stooping, crawling, and climbing a variety of equipment. Must be able to work in a safe and efficient manner in a fast-paced environment.

    Work Hours:
    Non-traditional work hours are required for this position. This position requires the employee to work on a variety of shifts, including day, swing and graveyard. Employees must be available and willing to work on any shift, and on any day of the week (including weekends and holidays).

    Knowledge & Skills

    • Modern cleaning methods including basic methods of cleaning and preserving floors, carpets, furniture, walls and fixtures
    • Cleaning materials, disinfectants, sanitizers and equipment used in custodial work
    • Health, safety regulations and proper use of personal safety equipment
    • Requirements of maintaining buildings in a safe, clean and orderly condition
    • Use and care for assigned cleaning tools
    • Use of cleaning compounds safely
    • Record keeping techniques
    • Understand and follow oral and written directions
    • Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others
    • Perform heavy manual labor
    • Meet schedules and time lines

    Examination Process:This is a competitive selection process. Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will have their responses to the Supplemental Questionnaire scored as the experience and training (E&T) test which will be used to establish an Eligibility List for this job classification. Applicants who pass the exam will be placed on an eligible list for potential interview and hiring consideration. Those who closely meet the business needs of the department may be invited to participate in the interview process.

    Candidates who are eligible for Veteran's Preference scoring criteria must attach a copy of their DD-214 member copy 4, (proof of military discharge form) at time of application , to be eligible for review for Veteran's Preference points, with redacted birth date and social security numbers.

    Per City of Tacoma Personnel Management Policy #170, the City of Tacoma is a drug-free work environment. Appointment is subject to successful completion of a pre-employment background check, a pre-employment medical exam, and a drug screen.
    This position is covered by a Labor Agreement between The City of Tacoma and the Teamsters Local Union 117, Tacoma Venues & Events Unit. New employees must successfully complete a nine-month probationary period prior to obtaining permanent status in this classification.

    Other Employment Information

    Direct Deposit: Employees are paid on a bi-weekly schedule by direct deposit.

    Salary Increases: Based on satisfactory job performance, the City provides for a regular progression of salary increases for most classifications according to the salary schedule.

    Union Affiliation: Many job classifications are covered by union security provisions which require union membership, dues, or payment of equivalent service fees.
