    THE POSITION: Under general direction and following established medically-approved policies and procedures, implements specialized skilled nursing processes in designated hospital units of Ventura County Medical Center (VCMC). Incumbents at this level are distinguished from other staff nursing classifications in that they demonstrate advanced competency skills reflecting specialized knowledge specific to the Labor & Delivery and Post Partum units.

    The ideal candidate for the Senior Registered Nurse - Labor & Delivery position is an experienced and highly competent professional who demonstrates advanced clinical expertise in providing comprehensive care to patients throughout all stages of the perinatal experience. This individual excels in implementing the full nursing process-from assessment and planning to evaluation-while maintaining the highest standards of safety, compassion, and evidence-based practice in accordance with VCMC policies and the Patient Bill of Rights. The ideal candidate effectively directs and supports staff in managing complex obstetric situations, serves as a preceptor and resource for peers and new nurses, and contributes to performance improvement initiatives and unit-based committees. They possess strong critical thinking skills, communicate clearly and empathetically with patients and interdisciplinary teams, and perform confidently in high-pressure and emergency situations while fostering a collaborative and supportive care environment. Current certification in the Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) and fetal monitoring are essential, reflecting their readiness to provide skilled and immediate maternal and neonatal care in emergent situations.

    PAYROLL TITLE: Senior Registered Nurse - Hospital

    WHAT WE OFFER: The County of Ventura offers an attractive compensation and benefits package that includes:
    • Educational Incentive: Incumbents may be eligible for an educational incentive of 2.5%, 3.5%, or 5% based on completion of an Associate's, Bachelor's, or Master's degree.
    • Bilingual Incentive: Incumbents may be eligible for bilingual incentive depending upon operational need and certification of skill $0.69 per hour (Level I), $1.00 per hour (Level II), $1.32 per hour (Level III).
    • Certification Pay: $0.813 per hour based on scheduled work week hours for each qualified certification up to a maximum of five (5) certifications.
    • Evening Shift Differential: 7.5%
    • Night Shift Differential: 15%
    • Weekend Shift Differential: $2.00 per hour
    • Standby Premium Pay: 1/4 of regular hourly wage or Federal minimum wage (whichever is greater)
    • Continuous County Service Incentive Pay: 1% for 7 years, 1.25% for 12 years and 1.5% for 17 years of continuous County service.
    • Health Benefits: You are afforded a biweekly flexible credit allowance for purchasing medical, dental, and/or vision insurance from authorized plans.
    • Deferred Compensation: Eligible to participate in the County's 401(K) Shared Savings Plan and/or the Section 457 Plan. If you participate in the County sponsored 401(K) plan, the County will match a part of your contribution up to 2% of your salary, on a per pay period basis.
    • Pension Plan: Participate in the County's defined benefits pension plan that provides lifetime payments to retirees. Members are "vested" after attaining five years of retirement service credit. If eligible, you may establish reciprocity with other public retirement systems such as CalPERS.
    • Holidays: 12 paid days per year which includes a scheduled floating holiday.

    AGENCY/DEPARTMENT: Health Care Agency - Ventura County Medical Center

    Senior Registered Nurse-Hospital is represented by the California Nurses' Association (CNA) and is eligible for overtime compensation. Salary placement will be determined according to the current CNA memorandum of agreement.

    The eligible list established from this recruitment will be used to fill current and future (including Temporary and Fixed-Term), Intermittent, and Extra-Help vacancies for this position only. There is currently one (1) Regular vacancy.

    TENTATIVE SCHEDULE:
    OPENING DATE: October 30, 2025
    CLOSING DATE: November 14, 2025, at 5:00 p.m.

    Examples Of Duties

    Duties may include but are not limited to the following:

    • Utilizes the nursing process to plan, deliver, and evaluate comprehensive patient care during the antepartum, intrapartum, and immediate postpartum periods;
    • Monitors maternal and fetal well-being, interprets fetal heart rate tracings, and responds to obstetric emergencies according to clinical protocols;
    • Administers prescribed treatments and medications in accordance with physician orders;
    • Performs and documents patient assessments and observations; reports all pertinent findings and ensures appropriate clinical follow-through;
    • Maintains unit organization and ensures completion of all delegated and indicated nursing duties by the end of the assigned shift;
    • Prepares and maintains a sterile surgical environment; manages instruments and supplies for procedures, positions patients, and assists with obtaining x-rays and medications as needed;
    • Participates in training, supervision, and evaluation of ancillary staff; assists with onboarding and mentoring of new personnel;
    • Provides physician assistance and patient care support in all perinatal unit areas, as indicated; and
    • Performs other duties as required.


    Typical Qualifications

    These are entrance requirements to the exam process and ensure neither continuance in the process nor placement on an eligible list.

    EDUCATION, TRAINING, and EXPERIENCE:
    Requires two (2) years of full-time professional registered nursing experience including two (2) years of full-time experience in Labor & Delivery.

    Necessary Special Requirements:
    • Must possess and maintain a current, valid license as a Registered Nurse issued by the State of California
    • Must have a current, valid Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) certification by first day of employment
    • For the Labor & Delivery assignment, must have a current, valid Neonatal Resuscitation Program certification and current approved Fetal Monitoring certification
    • ACLS certification is required within six (6) months of hire

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
    Thorough knowledge of:
    • professional nursing theory, techniques, and current practices, particularly as they relate to Labor and Delivery and neonatal care
    Working knowledge of:
    • medical terminology, hospital protocols, obstetric-specific equipment, medications, and controlled substances
    Working ability to:
    • plan and organize nursing care
    • train and supervise non-professional staff
    • establish and maintain the confidence of patients and interdisciplinary staff
    • work effectively across various hospital departments and shifts as needed
    • perform advanced fetal monitoring, accurately interpret electronic fetal heart rate patterns, and respond appropriately in accordance with established clinical standards.
