    Position Summary

    The medical assistant (MA), is a patient caregiver who, under the general supervision of the Director of Clinical Services or Senior Associate Vice President and the medical supervision of the medical provider, or registered nurse is responsible for direct and indirect patient care activities. The MA also helps maintain efficient and effective workflow to ensure high quality health care.

    FLSA: Non-Exempt (Eligible for overtime compensation)

    Anticipated Hiring Range: $3,776.00 (Step 1) - $4,513.00 (Step 10) per month

    CSU Classification Salary Range: $3,776.00 (Step 1) - $5,287.00 per month (Step 20)

    Our Student Health, Counseling and Wellness center provides an integrated approach to care combining both physical, mental and various needs of our students. This approach acknowledges the intricate connection between mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual wellness, recognizing that a person's mental health cannot be isolated from their overall health. Our multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals fosters an inclusive culture that addresses systemic disparities and creates an environment where individuals from diverse backgrounds feel respected, valued, and are provided with equitable access to quality care. Student Health, Counseling, and Wellness Services (SHCWS) staff are committed to continuously providing exceptional service for our campus community.     Minimum Qualifications

    Knowledge:

    In addition to those of the medical assistant, possess working knowledge of daily clinic operations; aseptic techniques and requirements; uses, application, and proper operation of various medical supplies and equipment used in performing the duties described above; California laws and regulations pertaining to medical assistants. General knowledge of anatomy and physiology appropriate to the duties assigned; understand the potential hazards or complications resulting from administering medications and how to initiate emergency procedures.

    Abilities:

    In addition to those of the medical assistant, ability to demonstrate the proper techniques in administering medications in a variety of manners including intramuscular, intradermal, or subcutaneous methods and by inhalation; proper techniques in performing injections and phlebotomy; competency in performing assigned medical technical support services such as the standard tests and limited procedures described above; maintain effective working relationships with practitioners and other health center support staff; and be sensitive to and communicate effectively with diverse patients.

    Education and Training:

    High school diploma or equivalent or combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge and abilities. While medical assistants are not certified, registered, or licensed in the State of California, the Medical Board of California requires that medical assistants complete specific types and hours of training to perform the duties outlined in their scope of practice. This training must be documented and a physician or other qualified teacher, as identified by the Medical Board of California, must certify in writing that the medical assistant has completed the training successfully. CSU-specific requirements are as follows:
    Most common, incumbents are required to possess a certificate of completion from an accredited and approved medical assisting program through the Department of Education or Bureau for Private Post-secondary Education within the Department of Consumer Affairs. In this case, the supervising CSU physician must verify competencies; OR At the discretion of the student health center Senior Associate Vice President an in-house campus-training program may be developed according to the guidelines established by the Medical Board of California. In this case, a CSU physician must document and certify in writing that the formal training and clinical practice hours required by the Medical Board of California to perform the duties of a medical assistant have been completed successfully.

    Required Qualifications

    Experience assisting with clinical procedures (e.g., suture removal, electrocardiograms, peak flow testing, spirometry, applying pre-made splints, assisting physicians/nurse practitioners with splints or casts, nasal smears, ear lavage, throat cultures, and rooming for exams. Experience providing intramuscular, intradermal or subcutaneous immunizations/injections. Experience performing standard tests and limited procedures (e.g., administering point of service Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments [CLIA] waived laboratory testing and processing). Phlebotomy experience and training. Experience performing non-clinical duties (e.g., coordinate patient flow, maintain supplies/inventory, prepare instrument packets/trays, ability to greet and register patients, etc.). Strong interpersonal and customer service skills with the ability to be sensitive and communicate effectively with patients. Strong organizational skills with the ability to maintain accurate records and inventory. Ability to work independently as well as part of a team in a diverse setting. Current Basic Life Support (CPR) certification. Maintain confidentiality and HIPAA compliance. Ability to work within an Electronic Medical Record.     Preferred Qualifications

    Medical Assistant Certification. Phlebotomy certification. Experience in related ambulatory care setting or clinic environment. Knowledge of insurance authorizations/referrals (Family PACT, Medi-Cal).
