The PositionThe City of Riverside is accepting applications for the position of
Library Assistant (Part-Time) to fill one (1) vacancy in the Neighborhood Services Division of the Library Department. The eligibility list established may be used to fill the current and/or upcoming vacancies within this classification for up to six (6) months.
The Library Assistant performs a wide variety of routine to moderately difficult clerical library duties; to interact with the public in providing library services.

click here. Work PerformedDuties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Serve and provide customer service at circulation desk; use automated system to check-in and check- out library materials, register new customers, and issue library cards.
- Operate computer to process orders for new boo ks, book withdrawals, transfers, acquisitions, and inventory control; search for reserve requests and notify custom ers when request is filled.
- Assist with service to customers by answerin g information questions, giving directions and making referrals to professional staff; hel p patrons in locating materials, reserving materials, securing holds, and basic use of library equipment and computers; answer telephone inquiries and issue new and replacement library cards.
- Assist customers in the operation and use of microfiche readers, copiers, microf ilm readers, computers, and other Library equipment; assist with basic machine maintenance.
- Serve at the reference desk, r espond to questions regarding library circulation policies and library procedures; research location of materials for various customer requests.
- Process overdue fine notices as required; collect, record, and account for fines; maintain and update delinquent files and issue receipts for paid items.
- Assist with the maintenance and development of the collection; file, sort, and organize books for cataloging, search shelves for overdue and lost books, and clean, m end, and perform minor repairs on library materials.
- Order, review, and distribute materials and supplies; process new books, current periodicals, paperbacks, slip covers materials, and other library materials.
- Maintain various files, records, statistics, and dat a; create reports and tally daily cash receipts.
- Perform general clerical support including typing of lists, labels, and cards; sort and distribute mail, correspondence, and other materials. 11. Assist in the preparation and ma intenance of bulletin boards and informational areas in the library; support the creation of programs, clubs, and workshops for the libraries; set up displays and eclectic educational areas.
- Participate in the promotion of the library serv ices through public relations, publicity, endorsement of library events, marketing, community awareness dr ives, fundraising, and other activities; acquires grants and other sources of funding; provides marketing and graphic design work.
- When required provide leadership of branch daily operations in the absence of upper management; open and close branch libraries as assig ned; provide statistical analysis and data organization.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
QualificationsEducation:Graduation from high school or equivalent.
Experience: Six (6) months experience in library or customer service.
Necessary Special Requirements: Must be able to work part-time or irregular schedules including evenings and weekends.
Highly Desired Qualifications:- The completion of supplemental college or business-related course work.
- Experience providing exceptional customer service.
- Library experience.

- Retirement for Classic Members - For employees hired after 1/1/2013 who are CLASSIC MEMBERS of California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS) or a reciprocal agency as of 12/31/12 and have not been separated from service from such agency for six months or more, the retirement benefit shall be 2.7 % @ age 55; 3-year final compensation. The required employee contribution is 8%. The City does not participate in Social Security; thus, employees do not bear this additional 6.2% expense.
- Retirement for New Members - For employees hired 1/1/2013 or later and who ARE NOT a member of the California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS) or a reciprocal agency as of 12/31/12, or those who have been separated from a public agency which contracts with CalPERS or a reciprocal agency for six months or more, the retirement benefit shall be 2% at age 62; 3 year final compensation. The required employee contribution is 50% of the normal cost and is subject to change per CalPERS every fiscal year. The City does not participate in Social Security; thus, employees do not bear this additional 6.2% expense.
- Health Insurance - The City offers six health insurance plans and contributes up to $1,687 per month for HMO plans (family coverage).
- Dental Insurance - The City provides three dental insurance plans and contributes up to $85 per month.
- Vision Insurance - The City provides vision coverage through Vision Service Plan (VSP) for employees and their dependents that are enrolled in medical coverage.
- Life Insurance - The City provides and pays for term life insurance equal to $100,000. Additional Life Insurance is available and voluntary for employees and eligible dependents (up to $300k).
- Deferred Compensation - The City contributes $50 a month with a minimum employee contribution of $12.50 per check. Participation in the deferred compensation plan is optional.
- Leave Benefits - Includes vacation leave, sick leave, bereavement leave, and holiday benefits. Please refer to the SEIU MOU for specific details.
- Flexible Spending Account - The City offers a Health Care and Dependent Care Flexible Spending Plan for optional participation.
- State Disability Insurance - Automatic coverage administered by the Employee Development Department (EDD) of the State of California
- Vacation Accrual - 0-4 yrs. = 80hrs, 5-9 yrs. = 120hrs, 10+ yrs. = 160 hrs.
