    The City of Ventura has an exciting opportunity to join our Parks and Recreation Department as an Urban Beautification Crew Worker I/II.

As part of the City’s Urban Beautification team, you’ll help maintain Ventura’s parks, beaches, sidewalks, and other public spaces-ensuring residents and visitors can enjoy our beautiful coastal community.

    Work hours vary depending upon the time of the year and may include weekends, afternoons, nights and/or holidays.

    Incumbent may be required to work stand-by on rotational basis and report to work on a callback basis as needed within a designated time frame. Standby assignment is at the discretion of the Division Manager.

    What You’ll Do

    As an Urban Beautification Crew Worker, you’ll perform a variety of routine and manual maintenance tasks that help keep Ventura’s public areas clean, attractive, and safe. Working as part of a roving crew, you’ll travel throughout the city performing daily inspections, cleanups, and upkeep of public spaces.

    Depending on assignment and experience level, duties will include:
    • Preserving the appearance of public spaces through daily maintenance and cleanup.
    • Assisting with the cleanup of public spaces and other impacted sites, ensuring areas are clean, safe, and accessible for community use.
    • Performing basic landscaping tasks such as watering, weeding, raking, and cultivating planting areas.
    • Maintaining and enhancing public facilities to ensure safety and cleanliness.
    • Performing manual labor, including cleaning up encampments, sweeping, shoveling, handling waste, hauling garbage, and transporting abandoned items.
    • Reporting maintenance needs, vandalism, or safety concerns to supervisors and law enforcement when appropriate.
    • Documenting daily work activities using a GIS-based mobile application.
    • Supporting community beautification efforts and special clean-up projects throughout the city.
    • Assisting trained staff with minor repairs and touch-ups.
    • Opening and securing facilities as needed.


    Work is performed outdoors year-round, often under varying weather conditions, and may include weekends, holidays, or evening shifts depending on operational needs.

    DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

    Urban Beautification Crew Worker I - This is the entry-level class in this series and is distinguished from the II level by the performance of less than the full range of duties as assigned to the journey-level class within the series. This class is typically used as a training class in that positions may have limited or no directly related work experience. Incumbents work under immediate supervision while learning job tasks.

    Urban Beautification Crew Worker II - This is the full journey level class of this series and is distinguished from the I level by the performance of the full range of duties as assigned, under general supervision with only occasional instruction or assistance.

    This position is flexibly staffed and may be filled at either level, depending on the qualifications, experience, and demonstrated skills of the incumbent, as well as the staffing needs of the City.

    • Exhibit professionalism and respect when working in or around sensitive community areas.

    The City of Ventura’s Parks & Recreation Department enhances community life by providing quality parks, recreation programs, and partnerships that connect people and places. The department includes three divisions: Parks, Recreation, and Community Partnerships.     Experience and Qualifications for Success!

    Urban Beautification Crew Worker I: A combination of education, training, and/or experience equivalent to six months working in a related maintenance or groundskeeping position.

    Urban Beautification Crew Worker II: A combination of education, training, and experience equivalent to one year of experience comparable to an Urban Beautification Crew Worker I in the City of Ventura (18 months related experience).

    License: Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid California driver license with an acceptable driving record.

    • Department Selection Interviews will be scheduled promptly after the oral panel interviews have been completed. Qualifying candidates will be notified by email if they are invited to the panel interview process .
    • December 2025 - Candidates will be notified of the outcome of the interview by this date.
