The City of Monterey is one of California’s most breathtaking coastal communities, where natural beauty, cultural richness, and a relaxed lifestyle converge. Nestled along Monterey Bay, it offers the charm of a small town with world-class amenities and serves as the economic and cultural heart of the Monterey Peninsula. Monterey is deeply rooted in history, home to the Native Rumsen people for thousands of years, the first capital of Alta California, and host to more historic downtown buildings than any city west of Santa Fe. Its legacy lives on through historic adobes, Cannery Row, and the renowned Monterey Bay Aquarium, while its thriving arts and music scene like the Monterey Jazz Festival continues to attract global attention. With a temperate climate and unparalleled natural surroundings, residents enjoy year-round opportunities for kayaking, hiking in Big Sur, golfing at Pebble Beach, and biking the 17-Mile Drive. Wildlife such as sea otters, whales, and harbor seals are part of everyday life. The city spans 8 square miles with 30,000 residents, a daily population of 70,000, and over 4 million annual visitors drawn to its iconic waterfront and the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary. The ideal candidate will be a well-rounded and experienced municipal leader with a deep understanding of modern city management practices, organizational functions, and the principles of public administration, finance, and personnel management.

Qualified candidates possess equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree in public or business administration, or a closely related field. A Master’s degree is highly desirable. Candidates should bring at least five years of progressively responsible administrative or managerial experience in a municipal setting, demonstrating expertise in planning, organizing, implementing, and supervising diverse programs and services. Any combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge and abilities will be considered. The annual salary range for the City Manager is up to $304,440.00 annually (DOE).
