Parks Gardener to join our team. This hands-on role is ideal for someone with a passion for horticulture and a strong background in irrigation, plant care, and landscape maintenance. The position focuses on maintaining and enhancing the City’s parks and open spaces through tasks such as irrigation system repairs and programming, plant identification, pruning, weed management, planting, fertilizing, and applying herbicides. Irrigation technical skills and certificates are highly desirable, along with the ability to use a variety of tools and equipment. QualificationsAny combination demonstrating the ability to effectively and successfully perform the duties of the position is considered qualifying. A typical combination is as follows:
Education: Graduation from high school or equivalent. Additional classes in horticulture or related fields are desirable.
Experience: Four years of park maintenance or gardening experience or one year of experience with the City as Maintenance Worker I where the applicant has acquired the skills and knowledge necessary to perform the duties of the position. Irrigation and landscaping experience is preferred.
License/Certificate Requirements: Due to the performance of some field duties, which may require the operation of a personal or City vehicle, a valid California Driver's license and an acceptable driving record is required. Must be able to obtain a California Class B Driver's License with appropriate endorsement(s). A Qualified Applicator Certificate for pesticides is preferred.
Supplemental InformationDOT Compliance
In compliance with the Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations and the City's policy on random testing for controlled substances and alcohol for commercially licensed drivers, candidates for this position who are commercially licensed are required to pass a drug test prior to placement in the position. All employees working in this position, who are subject to maintaining a commercial driver's license for the performance of duties, will be enrolled as participants in the City's Random Testing Program for Controlled Substances and Alcohol.

Pre-employment Process: Selected candidates must successfully pass a fingerprint check with the State Department of Justice, and a pre-placement physical including a drug test. Education and employment verification and reference check(s) will also be conducted.
