    General

    The Mechanic “C” is the entry-level position at the San Mateo County Transit District (SMCTD). Under close supervision of the Maintenance Supervisor, the Mechanic “C” performs routine servicing and minor maintenance on transit buses, non-revenue vehicles, and maintenance shop equipment for the San Mateo County Transit District (SamTrans) property and in the field.

    Essential Functions & Duties

    EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
    • Perform minor repairs, preventive maintenance and inspections on transit buses, fleet vehicles and maintenance ship equipment.
    • Maintain records of repair work, defects and maintenance.
    • Road test transit buses and other SamTrans’s vehicles on and off Operations bases.
    • Assist Mechanic’s “A” and “B” with repairs and heavy labor work.
    EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
    • Perform preventive maintenance inspection and report vehicles’ defects and damages.
    • Check and add fuel, coolant, and oils.
    • Change tires and replace seats.
    • Perform all job duties and responsibilities in a safe manner to protect one’s self, fellow employees, District property, and the public from injury or harm. Promotes safety awareness and follows safety procedures in an effort to reduce or eliminate accidents.
    • Perform other duties as assigned.


    Minimum Qualifications

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
    Sufficient education, training and experience to demonstrate the knowledge and ability to successfully perform the essential functions of the position. Development of the required knowledge and abilities is typically obtained through but not limited to:
    • One (1) year of full time experience in the maintenance, service, and repair of one or more of the following: automotive, transit diesel, or hybrid vehicles.
    • Must possess a valid Class C California driver’s license with a safe driving record, and have a Class B permit with air brake passenger endorsements within seven days of hire.
    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
    • Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
    • Must be able to work different shifts; at any of two District operated facilities inclusive of weekend and holidays.
    • Must be able to pass pre-employment physical, drug screen, and background check.

    • Paid Holidays - The District provides seven paid holidays throughout the year - New Years Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day (July 4th), Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day

    • CalPERS PEPRA vs. Classic - All employees hired on, or after January 1, 2013, are considered PEPRA members and will contribute 8% of their salary up to the maximum IRS cut-off. All Classic members will contribute 6%
