    Job Description:

    Purpose:

    Under close supervision, performs tasks in the installation, maintenance, and removal of traffic control signs and markings.

    Duties, Functions and Responsibilities:

    Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.

    • Receives daily work and prepares materials and equipment.
    • Performs maintenance on road markings, tools, and machinery.
    • Installs pavement markings on roadways, parking lots, athletic courts, and airports according to specifications and other various requirements.
    • Operates all equipment to install pavement markings. Performs preventative maintenance on vehicles and equipment. Performs pre-trip/ post trip inspections on tools, equipment, and machinery.
    • Calculates field measurements using engineered plans, maps, aerial photographs, or satellite images.
    • Installs, removes, and replaces signs as needed.
    • Documents daily work in work order software.
    • Performs traffic control.


    Responsibilities - Supervisor and/or Leadership Exercised:

    None.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

    Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.
    • Knowledge of applicable Federal, State, and Local codes; City practices, policies, and procedures including construction, customer service; and DIG TESS safety procedures and policies including ATSSA and TMUCD.
    • Skill in oral and written communication.
    • Skill in the installation of bike corrals/racks, road cushions, traffic legends, symbols, and vertical delineation devices.
    • Skill in the layout of Roadway Markings Plans.
    • Skill in the use of fabrication equipment and use of fabrication software design programs and CAD programs.
    • Skill in the use of hand tools.
    • Skill in the use of informational databases to track items or monitor progress.
    • Ability to accurately log and report work progress, materials, labor hours, etc. with or without the use of computer software.
    • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with City employees and the public.
    • Ability to maintain a clean and orderly work environment.
    • Ability to operate and use all safety equipment and specialty installation equipment.
    • Ability to perform Striper Coning functions.
    • Ability to test and calibrate instruments to make precision and close tolerance repairs and adjustments.
    • Ability to use cell phones, two-way radios, and other communications equipment.


    Minimum Qualifications:

    Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent, plus one (1) year of experience in a construction or traffic control role.

    Licenses and Certifications Required:
    • Must have a Texas Commercial Driver License or ability to obtain within five (5) months of employment or approved extension by Department Director or designee.
    • Valid Texas Driver License.


    Preferred Qualifications:
    • Ability to perform technically detailed tasks in Traffic Signs and Roadway Markings operations.
    • Experience using Traffic Signs installation and maintenance equipment such as hammer drills, socket wrenches and similar.
    • Experience using Roadway Markings installations and maintenance equipment, such as surface grinders, push carts, spray rigs, long-line striping trucks.
    • Experience using bucket truck in traffic whilst performing banner, overhead sign installation or tree trimming.
    • Experience using computer devices to complete daily work assignments and upload files.


    Notes to Candidate:

    The Signs and Markings Technician I will perform skilled tasks in the installation and maintenance of Traffic Signs, Roadway Markings and/or Banners. This position will work within a controlled work area or temporary traffic closure and along active lanes of traffic. This position will work in all types of weather conditions and may to respond to emergencies during weather or emergency events as well as potentially perform call-back assignments on a 24-hour rotation.

    Essential Employee:

    This position is considered an “Essential” role and is essential to the operations of the City based on the preparation, response, and recovery phase of extraordinary situations or emergency conditions. As an employee that has been designated as “Essential” the expectation will be to work at a designated work site during declared extraordinary situations or emergency conditions to serve the community. Essential Employees during emergencies play a role in ensuring the public health, safety, and welfare of our community and ensuring City operations continue.

    Pay Range: $21.63 - $23.79 per hour.

    Hours: Monday through Friday; 7:00 a.m. through 4:00 p.m.

    *Subject to change dependent on operational needs or expectations to include nights and/or weekends.

    Location: 8900 Cameron Road, Austin, TX, 78754.

    Drug Testing: To be considered for employment in this position applicants must comply with Department of Transportation Federal Regulations and the City of Austin Drug Policy.

    Driving Requirement: This position requires a Valid Texas Class C Driver License or the ability to acquire one by your hire date. This position must have a Texas Commercial Driver License or ability to obtain within five (5) months of employment or approved extension by Department Director or designee.

    External New Hires must meet the City of Austin's Driver Record Evaluation (DRE) requisite . To be considered for a driving position, applicants cannot have more than three moving violations or a total of six Driver Record Evaluation points within a period of thirty-six (36) months.
