    After just six (6) months on the job, Part-Time Single-Role EMT-B's can apply for our Internal Recruit Training Program. This District-funded opportunity opens the door to earning your Paramedic License or completing the Firefighter I Academy — at no cost to you. With paramedic school alone costing upwards of $15,000, this program is a major career and financial advantage.

    ABOUT THE DISTRICT

    The San Ramon Valley Fire Protection District is an independent Special District in Contra Costa County responsible for providing a high level of emergency and non-emergency services to the communities it serves. The District's service area encompasses approximately 155 square miles, serving the communities of Alamo, Blackhawk, Danville, Diablo, San Ramon, the southern boundary of Morgan Territory, and the Tassajara Valley. The District serves a population of 192,858. The communities are primarily residential, commercial, office park, and controlled manufacturing, along with wildland areas, protected by nine stations and one volunteer staffed station with 185 employees, and 56 volunteers. Financial oversight and strategic policy direction are provided by an elected 5-member Board of Directors.

    DEFINITION
    Under direction of the assigned Duty Battalion Chief, provides patient care and ambulance transport services as a member of the San Ramon Valley Fire Protection District Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Division.

    EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
    The non-safety, position of Part-Time Single Role Emergency Medical Technician (EMT-B) works under the direct supervision of the assigned Duty Battalion Chief in conjunction with other District staff and the overall direction of the Operations Duty Chief. The primary responsibility of the Single Role EMT-B is to provide the highest-level emergency medical care at the basic life support (BLS) level while assisting paramedics in providing advanced life support (ALS) care, and to transport patients as a team member of the District’s 911 EMS System.

    The Part-Time Single Role EMT-B will respond to both critical and non-critical medical responses working with a paramedic partner and members of an engine or truck companion certain responses. The Part-Time Single Role EMT-B is expected to demonstrate sound judgment that demonstrates the highest ethical and moral standards in the performance of job duties and other situations with and without explicit direction.

    The incumbent will be required to perform a full range of EMS skills and services, including but not limited to:
    1. Must pass District EMS Academy and all related new hire didactic skills and training with no less than 80% final score, prior to release to Single Role EMT-B status within the District.
    2. Utilize BLS level skills during training, while at the scene of an emergency, or during patient care to assist paramedics in providing ALS care.
    3. Operate District-owned ambulances and other District vehicles as directed, including driving to and from medical emergencies as part of the ambulance transport team.
    4. Cleans and decontaminates as necessary or directed District equipment, apparatus, and facilities.
    5. Collection and documentation or patient billing information per District policy.
    6. Maintains and restocks inventory of ambulance and station EMS supplies through logistics orders.
    7. Performs preventative maintenance inspections (PMI) on assigned apparatus.
    8. Follows all Federal, State, County, Local, and District laws, regulations, protocols, and policies, including the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).
    9. Attend and successfully complete District and hospital training sessions and drills.
    10. Participates in overseeing operational readiness and cleanliness of District apparatus and equipment.
    11. Maintain all appropriate licenses and certifications.
    12. Participate in all assigned training.
    13. Participate in public education/training eff orts.
    14. Attend District and County meetings as directed.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    QUALIFICATIONS -
    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge Of:
    1. Applicable Federal, State, County, Local, and District laws, regulations, protocols, and policies.
    2. Principles of emergency ambulance and transportation procedures including first aid, resuscitator, and gurney operations, including safeemergency work practices.
    3. Infectious disease control procedures.
    4. Emergency radio communication procedures.
    5. Medical terminology and documentation.
    6. Emergency vehicle maintenance and operation.

    Ability To:
    1. Read electronic and incident maps and follow map directions.
    2. Work effectively in difficult and hazardous emergency situations and environments and carry out work assignments as instructed.
    3. Safely and properly transport patients during ambulance transportation.
    4. Follow oral and written instructions.
    5. Communicate effectively with the public and fellow employees.

    Age

    Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age.
    License
    Possession of and ability to maintain a current State of California Driver’s License, Class C, is a condition of employment.
    The following minimum qualifications are required: Possession of a high school diploma or GED.Possession of and ability to maintain a valid State of California Emergency Medical Technician certification and Healthcare Provider CPR certification at time of conditional job offer.Possession of a valid Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) issued within the last 24 months, by time of appointment. Highly Desirable Qualifications:
    • Ambulance work experience
    • College degree from an accredited university
    • California State Fire Marshal Accredited Firefighter I Academy
    • California State Fire Marshal Training Courses
    The minimum education or experience requirements may be modified at the sole discretion of the Fire Chief.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS
    Maintain physical ability and stamina to meet position tasks and responsibilities. Physical abilities must commensurate with the essential functions of the position.

    Essential duties described in the Part-Time Single Role Emergency Medical Technician (EMT-B) job description are performed in and affected by the following environmental and operational factors:

    1. Operate both as a member of a team and independently at incidents of uncertain factors.
    2. Spend extensive time outside exposed to the elements.
    3. Work in wet, icy, or muddy areas.
    4. Perform a variety of tasks on slippery, hazardous surfaces such as on roadways.
    5. Work in areas where sustaining traumatic or thermal injuries are possible.
    6. Face exposure due to working in proximity to emergency scenes where carcinogenic dusts such as asbestos, toxic substances such as hydrogen cyanide, acids, carbon monoxide, or organic solvents are present either through inhalation or skin contact.
    7. Face exposure to infectious agents such as but not limited to Hepatitis B or HIV.
    8. Wear designated personal protective equipment while performing essential functions.
    9. Perform complex tasks during life-threatening emergencies.
    10. Work for long periods of time, requiring sustained physical activity and intense concentration.
    11. Face life and death decision during emergency conditions.
    12. Exposure to grotesque sights and smells associated with major trauma and burn victims.
    13. Make rapid transitions from rest to near maximal exertion without warm-up periods.
    14. Operate in environments of high noise, poor visibility, limited mobility, at heights, and in enclosed or confined spaces.
    15. Rely on senses of sight, hearing, smells, and touch to help determine the nature of the emergency, maintain personal safety, and make critical decisions in a confused, chaotic, and potentially life-threatening environment throughout the duration of the incident.

    The Part-Time Single Role EMT-B is a three (3) year limited term position. The term of employment may be extended at the discretion of the Fire Chief.

    The Part-Time Single Role EMT-B will be expected to participate in the Reserve Firefighter (Volunteer) Program.

    The Part-Time Single Role EMT-B position is expected to transition into the Single Role Paramedic position within the three (3) year term. Employees who transition into the rank of Single Role Paramedic must:
    1. Be in good standing with the District.
    2. Possess a State of California Paramedic license.
    3. Possess a CPAT card that is valid within 24 months of the final filing data for Single Role Paramedic as determined by the District.
    4. Receive a passing score in an interview process.

    Within the boundaries of the District are expansive wildland and recreation areas, large single-family homes and multi-family residential complexes, hotels, a regional hospital and a 585-acre business park. The District is also bisected by a major interstate highway (I-680).
