Why join Contra Cost County Fire-Protecion District?Contra Costa County Fire Protection District is a full-service, all-hazards district that operates with a highly trained team of more than 670 firefighters and professional staff, responding from 37 strategically placed fire stations across 582 square miles. Our operational strength includes a diverse fleet of fire engines, ladder trucks, rescues, boats, dozers, and specialized hazardous materials units. We are further supported by elite teams, including FEMA Urban Search & Rescue, Cal OES hazardous materials response, a Type 2IA hand crew, and a paramedic on every response unit.
The Fire District Apparatus Shop provides routine preventative maintenance and emergency repairs for our Fire Apparatus. The Apparatus Shop is staffed by an Apparatus Manager, six (6) Fire Equipment Vehicle Technicians, a Fire Service Coordinator, and a Driver Clerk an Equipment Mechanic. The Fire District has almost 150 pieces of Fire Apparatus, which includes Type 1, Type 2, Type 3, Type 4. Type 6 engines as well as Tillers, Hazmats, UTV's, Quints, Water Tenders and Rescue vehicles.
We are currently recruiting to fill one (1) Equipment Mechanic position in the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District.
We are looking for someone who is:- Detail-Oriented - able to detect conditions that could affect the safe operation of automotive vehicles and heavy-duty equipment

- Knowledgeable - possesses a complete understanding of the materials, tools, and practices used in automotive and heavy equipment maintenance and repair
What will you typically be responsible for: - Wiring and installing emergency lighting, sirens, and warning devices on light duty fire department vehicles
- Diagnosing and repairing electrical issues related to emergency lighting, sirens, and warning devices
- Performing design, fabrication, and modification work on light duty fire department vehicles to meet operational needs
- Mounting and securing firefighting equipment on light duty fire department vehicles

Minimum QualificationsLicense Required: Possession of a valid California motor vehicle operator’s license. Out of state valid motor vehicle operator’s license will be accepted during the application process.
A valid California motor vehicle license Class B must be acquired prior to completing probationary period and must be maintained throughout employment with Contra Costa County.
Experience: Either
1) Completion of a recognized apprenticeship as an Automotive or Equipment Mechanic and one year of full-time or its equivalent journey level Automotive or Equipment Mechanic experience; or
2) Three years of journey level Automotive or Equipment Mechanic experience.
Physical Requirements: Ability to meet such health standards as may be prescribed by the County Medical Consultant.
Special Requirement:Must possess/own small and large hand tools, and work aides necessary to perform mechanical automotive and heavy equipment work.
Special Requirement: Employees in this class are subject to drug and alcohol testing under provisions of the County’s Drug and Alcohol Testing Program.
Desirable Qualifications:- Proficient with automotive electronics
- Emergency chassis modifications
- Automotive and heavy-duty fabrication experience
