    The City of Santa of Santa Fe Springs is seeking a highly-motivated individual for the position of Traffic Signal & Lighting Assistant. This is a Full-Time position in the Public Works Department, Signals & Street Lighting Services Division.

    POSITION PURPOSE:
    Under direct supervision from a traffic & lighting technician, works in the installation, maintenance, repair, modification of traffic signal control and street lighting equipment; and assists the Traffic Lighting Technicians in their technical responsibilities.

    SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
    Receives direct supervision from the Traffic & Lighting Supervisor or a technician.

    SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
    Exercises no supervision.

    A. Held in Common:
    Supports the Mission of the City and its Elected and Appointed Officials. Provides courteous and timely service to the public as the ultimate employer. Works cooperatively with other City employees. Exhibits integrity and displays ethical behavior.

    B. Essential Job Specific Duties:

    Performs traffic signal and street lighting installation, maintenance and inspection tasks; assists the Traffic & Lighting Technicians in their technical responsibilities. Work with high voltage; follows all designated safety precautions and processes around high voltage work. Assists with troubleshooting and repairing electrical malfunctions associated with traffic and street light equipment. Performs preventative maintenance of intersections and control cabinets. Assists in performing regular inspections of City street lighting; assists in performing repairs street lighting. Assists with relocation of street light poles; assists in the re-routing of conduits and wiring. Removes and installs seasonal banners throughout the City. Installs and removes all holiday decorations throughout the City. Works outdoors in various weather conditions and in high places. Performs related duties as required.

    C. Other Job Specific Duties:

    Implement and follow safety procedures; works effectively and safely with others.Works varied shifts; works weekends or overtime as required. Complete work assignments in a safe and timely manner. Maintain regular attendance; Follow oral and written instructions, and perform other related duties as assigned.

    REPRESENTATIVE COMPETENCIES AND QUALIFICATIONS:
    The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and ability required to satisfactorily perform the jobs essential duties and responsibilities.

    Knowledge of:
    Fundamentals of electronics, related to traffic signal and street lighting devices. Hand tools and equipment to modify, repair, and maintain traffic signals, street lights, automatic traffic counting devise, and illuminated street name signs. Mechanical and aerial devices. Electrical codes. Safety rules, regulations, and practices. Tools and equipment necessary to protect the public and other workers. Departmental and City policies and procedures. Federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations. Modern office procedures and equipment including computers. Work processing and other related software applications.
    Ability to: Complete assignments in safe and timely manner. Follow written and oral instructions. Communicate effectively verbally and in writing. Work with accuracy and attention to detail. Effectively organize and prioritize assigned work. Safely drive City vehicles. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other people.

    EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
    The following requirements generally demonstrate possession of the minimum requisite knowledge and ability necessary to perform the duties of the position. A typical way to obtain these would be:
    • High School Diploma or an equivalent certificate or diploma recognized by the State of California.
    • A valid State of California driver’s license and an acceptable driving record.
    • Sufficient experience is necessary to have acquired the specific skills and knowledge needed for the duties of this classification.
    • Ability to complete the IMSA Field Technician Level I and Work Zone Safety courses and Certification testing within 6 (six) months of employment. A one-time 6 (six) month extension may be granted for retesting if necessary.


    NEPOTISM POLICY:
    Relatives may be appointed regardless of the designation of full or part-time classification. "Relative" shall be defined as: mother, father, son, daughter, brother, sister, grandmother, grandfather, grandchild, spouse, domestic partner, step mother, step-father, step-sister, step-brother, stepchild and step grandchild.
