    The City of Palo Alto is hiring a Storekeeper to join our Warehouse Operations team under the Administrative Services Department. In this role, you’ll receive, store, and distribute materials, equipment, and products to City departments—helping keep essential operations running smoothly. This role will report to the Warehouse Supervisor.

    We are seeking a reliable, motivated, and team-oriented individual who brings a combination of hands-on experience and a strong commitment to customer satisfaction. The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications and attributes:

    • 1-2 years of experience operating a delivery route with a proven track record of reliability and punctuality
    • 1-2 years of experience in shipping and receiving operations, with an understanding of logistics processes
    • Familiarity with SAP system or similar tools used in product and inventory management
    • Previous experience working in a warehouse or distribution environment
    • Highly detail-oriented and organized, with the ability to effectively manage multiple tasks and priorities
    • A team player who thrives in a collaborative, team-focused work environment
    • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, especially in small group settings
    • Certified or experienced in operating a forklift
    • Customer-focused and comfortable working in a public-facing role
    • Physically capable of lifting up to 100 lbs, with a strong work ethic and safety awareness
    • Familiarity with municipal utility parts and installation

    Key Responsibilities:
    • Operate a designated delivery route with approximately 30 stops, including all five city libraries, ensuring timely and accurate transportation of mail and materials.
    • Transport mail and other interoffice correspondence from City Hall to various departments and facilities across the route.
    • Facilitate the delivery and return of library materials between the city’s five libraries, maintaining care and accuracy.
    • Provide professional, courteous customer service at the warehouse front counter, assisting internal departments with inquiries and requests.
    • Receive, inspect, and document all incoming deliveries, ensuring accuracy, condition, and compliance with safety protocols.
    • Issue parts, supplies, and other inventory items to city departments, following established procedures and documentation standards.
    • Perform regular inventory cycle counts and participate in the annual physical inventory to maintain accurate stock records.
    • Organize and store inventory in designated locations to ensure efficient retrieval and stock rotation.
    • Utilize the City's SAP system to manage inventory transactions, monitor stock levels, and update item records.
    • Handle, document, and store surplus property in accordance with city guidelines, ensuring items are processed safely and correctly.
    • Collaborate with buyers and departmental staff to resolve receiving discrepancies and address inventory-related issues.
    • Prepare clear, concise written reports on any variances or issues identified during the receiving process.
    • Process outgoing shipments through the UPS shipping station as requested by city staff, ensuring proper packaging and documentation.
    • Operate a forklift safely and effectively once certified through the City's training program.
    • Monitor the condition and accessibility of warehouse safety equipment, including fire extinguishers, hazardous material signage, and automated external defibrillators (AEDs).
    • Maintain a safe, clean, and organized warehouse environment by performing weekly cleaning of aisles, lobby, overhangs, and breakroom.

    Essential Duties

    Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
    • Maintains security of equipment, parts and materials.
    • Conveys materials and items from receiving area to storage area by hand truck and materials handling equipment.
    • Sorts and places inventory in storage areas, shelves or in bins according to predetermined sequence such as size, type, or product code.
    • Records, sorts and places surplus inventory (police and other City surplus) in storage to be held for disposal, sale or auction.
    • Operates material lifting equipment, including forklift.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Sufficient education, training and/or work experience to demonstrate possession of the following knowledge, skills and abilities, which would typically be acquired through:
    • Experience in inventory control and warehouse operations.

    Special Requirements:
    • Possession of a valid California Driver's License.

    City Government

    Palo Alto is a full-service charter city with a council-manager form of government. The seven-member City Council is elected at large, and the City Council annually selects the Mayor and Vice Mayor from among its members.
