    Vacation & Sick Leave

    At the City of Buckeye, we understand the vital role that vacation time plays in supporting the mental, physical, and emotional well-being of our employees. Vacation and sick leave accruals begin on the first day of employment and may be used upon accrual. Additionally, employees receive credit towards vacation leave accruals for years of service with other public sector retirement systems nationwide (not including Federal service).

    Holidays

    The City of Buckeye observes eleven holidays per year: New Years Day, Martin Luther King Day, Presidents Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Veteran's Day, Thanksgiving and the day after Thanksgiving, and Christmas Day.

    Retirement
    This position participates in the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS). Contribution is mandatory, and the current contribution rate is 12%, per fiscal year.

    Primary Duties and Responsibilities

    GENERAL PURPOSE: An Emergency Vehicle Technician III (Fire) performs skilled maintenance and repair on all fire apparatus to include diagnosing and repairing vehicle systems on fire equipment, complex firefighting apparatus and related equipment.

    PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    The following duties ARE NOT intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by all employees in this classification, only a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties.

    • Performs routine maintenance and repairs on various emergency apparatus including but not limited to Pumpers, Ladders, HAZMAT, Brush and Special Response units.
    • Performs routine maintenance and repairs on various specialty tools utilized on fire apparatus, such as extraction tools, communication systems and other firefighting systems utilized by the department.
    • Maintains and repairs auxiliary equipment, such as generators, water pumps, and roof mount a/c systems, and/or AC or DC voltage electrical systems.
    • Performs diagnosis on complex fire system unique to fire apparatus and proprietary manufacturers with knowledge of systems and proper operations to complete task
    • Performs diagnosis and repairs of complex electrical and hydraulic systems components
    • Performs routine vehicle inspections and repairs, including annual certification for Pump Testing and Federal Mandated DOT inspections per guidelines
    • Performs mathematical calculations and statistical computations for annual pump testing
    • Comprehends and makes inferences from written material such as manufactures’ service and parts manuals and NFPA regulations to diagnose and repair fire apparatus
    • Understands and interprets schematic drawings and layouts to perform problem analysis
    • Inspects and tests all work performed to ensure quality of service performed and compliance with standard operating procedures, federal regulations, National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and emission regulations
    • Performs machining and welding work related to repairs or fabrication of heavy-duty equipment
    • Performs physical inventories
    • Maintains highest level of job activity record keeping utilizing fleet software
    • Perform other duties as assigned or required


    Minimum Qualifications & Position Requirements

    Education and Experience:

    High School diploma or GED equivalent and five (5) years of specialized experience in vehicle maintenance and repairs; ASE Master in Heavy Truck and EVT Master Technician Certification

    Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

    Knowledge of:
    • City and Fleet policies and procedures
    • Hazards and safety precautions of a fleet technician
    • Methods, materials and practices of a fleet technician
    • Procedures and methods used in the maintenance/repair of diesel fire engines, pumps and aerial type equipment
    • Water hydraulics (including water pumps, valves, governors and relief valve systems)
    • Firefighting equipment and apparatus
    • Firefighting methods and maintenance practices
    • Principles on all types of fire apparatus electronic control systems
    • Procedures and methods of aerial ladder and hydraulic maintenance, troubleshooting and repair
    • Mig, tig and arc welding fabrication
    • Principles and practices of vehicle and equipment repair and service procedures.
    • Safety standards and practices in a shop environment
    • Microsoft Office products and ability to learn specialized software applications.


    Skill in:
    • Diagnosis and repair of all types of fire apparatus and equipment
    • Use and care of tools employed in all phases of repair and maintenance
    • Use of appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE)
    • Working within deadlines to complete projects and assignments.
    • Working independently, as well as cooperatively in a team environment.
    • Assessing and prioritizing multiple tasks, projects and demands.


    Ability to:
    • Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
    • Establish and maintain positive, effective working relationships with those contacted in the performance of work.
    • Provide support and solutions with a high level of customer service.
    • Effectively plan and assign maintenance/repair work
    • Maintain a clean and organized work environment with focus on workplace safety and compliance with safety and health standards for injury prevention.
    • Perform master EVT level repair work on a wide variety of fire apparatus, vehicles and fire equipment
    • Drive and operate fire apparatus as designed by original equipment manufacturers as required for transporting or testing for repair confirmation
    • Assume the duties of the shop superintendent in their absence
    • Perform all physical requirements of the class

    12-Month Goals:
    • Maintain ASE Master and EVT Master Certification level.
    • Maintain at a minimum 80% productivity and 95% accuracy of repairs for fire apparatus.
    • Attend a minimum of one in-state Arizona Fire Mechanic Association training to keep well-informed of current events in the fire maintenance industry.
    • Depending on funding, attend a manufacturer training to continue the knowledge of either Sutphen or Pierce apparatus specific to the City’s fleet.


    Additional Information

    Special Requirements: Possession of a valid Arizona Commercial Driver’s License; ASE Certifications as a Master Medium Heavy-Duty Truck and a Master Level EVT Certification, with ability to maintain certifications. Must provide own tools.

    Physical Demands / Work Environment: Physical Environment shall include sitting, standing, walking, driving, climbing, crouching, bending and stretching. Social environment shall include high volume work, time pressures, interruptions, teamwork and multi-tasking. You must be able to safely lift 50lbs from the ground to waist high. This includes tires, brakes, engine and transmission parts or any other items related to a fleet repair facility. Working Environment shall include indoors, outdoors, stairs, ladders, confined areas and high places. Includes working safely with power tools, welders and high-pressure testing equipment when testing air conditioning, coolant, fuel and hydraulic systems.
