Description The Department: Silicon Valley Power
Since 1896, Silicon Valley Power (SVP) has provided electricity for residents and businesses in Santa Clara. The Electric Department has a budgeted staff of 198 employees who provide such diverse services as operating, maintaining and dispatching electric service, engineering, system planning, administrative and financial management, marketing, customer services, power trading, outdoor Wi-Fi services and dark fiber leasing services, all of which work together to make SVP successful for the City and its residents.
The Position(s): Fiber Engineering Intern II/III
The SVP Fiber program supports and maintains SVP’s fiber network for Santa Clara’s Electric Utility by managing its fiber infrastructure (i.e. fiber conduit, cable, manholes/handholes, splicing termination and testing services). It also allows for future development of communications fiber infrastructure to support SVP operations and City-based applications. Lastly, SVP Fiber also ensures that Santa Clara is a technology and innovation hub by providing the needs of local businesses and schools.
- Draft and document SVP fiber structures, splices and cables in AutoCAD.
- Update cable, patch panel and service location documentation in Excel or GIS.
- Provide field checks and verification for communications network cables and structures.
- Assist with inventory updates and parts requests for future work.
- Observe field crews with visits to document and understand construction methods and procedures and assist with field as-builts in eBuilder.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Communications Intern II
- Assist in creating, scheduling, and publishing content across platforms (Instagram, Facebook, X, LinkedIn)
- Brainstorm creative campaign ideas and support content planning calendars
- Monitor comments, messages, and mentions; flag items that require staff response
- Track and report on post-performance and engagement metrics
- Help research trends, holidays, and best practices in social media marketing
- Capture and organize photo/video content from events or daily activities (as applicable)
- Assist with writing and editing short-form content for stories, reels, or graphics
- Collaborate with Customer Engagement team for visual content
- Maintain organized file libraries for digital assets
- Support other outreach and marketing efforts as needed
Customer Engagement Intern II
- Support SVP Customer Engagement Program administrative duties as assigned
- Research and report out on a variety of topics as assigned
- Attend Customer Engagement related events in the community to promote SVP’s customer programs
- Track existing customer program efforts
- Participate in internal planning meetings and customer working groups
Educational Outreach Intern II/III
- Assist with educational outreach on energy efficiency, renewable energy, building electrification, transportation electrification, and financial assistance programs.
- Participate in community events.
- Work with high school students on student grant program.
- Assist with after school energy education program with Santa Clara Unified School District.
- Target outreach to income-qualified customers to increase enrollment in Financial Rate Assistance Program.
- In-person outreach to property management companies regarding programs that will benefit Santa Clara residents in multifamily housing.
- Prepare and deliver public presentations to school-age children and adults on a variety of topics related to energy efficiency, electrification and renewable energy.
- Assist with rebate application processing and investigate high bill complaints.
- Research on various energy-related topics.
- Assist with data analysis to identify target markets for increasing customer program participation.
- Other duties as assigned.
Required:- Knowledge of Microsoft suite (Word, Excel and PowerPoint);
- Good communication skills;
- A valid driver’s license.
As an as-needed employee, this is an "at-will" position and there is no guarantee of hours. Hours are limited to 999 in a fiscal year or 960 hours in a fiscal year for retired CalPERS annuitants.

- Student Intern I: $18.20 - $22.00
- Student Intern II: $21.69 - $26.25
- Student Intern III: $23.97 - $29.00
Minimum Qualifications EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE Minimum Education Requirements: - Student Intern I: Current enrollment in a high school or an alternative vocational high-school working toward high school equivalency with the minimum completion of the 10th grade.
- Student Intern II: Current enrollment in an accredited college or university in an undergraduate program.
- Student Intern III: Current enrollment in an accredited college or university for completion of a Master’s degree.

License/Certifications: - For the Educational Outreach Student Intern, a California Class C driver’s license is required.
