    Position Scope

    This is a stand-alone appointed classification in the City of Buckeye municipal court.Incumbents preside over criminal and civil court proceedings and issue legally binding rulings and directives. This position is part-time, on-call covering judicial absences or special calendars at the City Court.

    Primary Duties and Responsibilities

    The following duties are not intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by an employee in this classification, only a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed, and may be required to perform additional position-specific duties.
    • Adjudicates misdemeanor, criminal traffic, civil traffic and city code violations.
    • Presides over initial appearances, arraignments, pre-trial conferences, civil traffic hearings, probation violation hearings, restitution hearings, jury and non-jury trials, sentencings and sentence review hearings.
    • Reviews and grants search warrants.
    • Conducts hearings on petitions for orders of protection, injunctions prohibiting harassment, and issues court orders.
    • Reviews and signs criminal complaints.
    • Researches, explains and applies laws, rules and regulations.
    • Assists the Presiding City Judge in administering court policies, procedures, and practices.
    • Participates in judicial education as required.
    • Performs other related work as required.


    Minimum Qualifications & Position Requirements

    Knowledge of:
    • General law, court procedures and rules of evidence; the causes and corrective measure of antisocial behavior, principles of civil and criminal law, appeals problems and procedures; and methods of legal research.
    • Court policies and procedures.
    • Case management techniques.
    • Microsoft Office products and other relevant technologies.

    Skill and Ability to:
    • Conduct court proceedings and elicit pertinent information from all parties involved.
    • Communicate orally with defendants, witnesses and the public in group settings to give instructions or information and to response to questions.
    • Personify leadership, value diversity, promote shared responsibility and teamwork.
    • Conduct and control court proceedings, elicit pertinent information and confine witnesses and litigants to relevant issues.
    • Appraise factual situations and make appropriate decisions promptly and in accordance with the law.


    Minimum Qualifications:

    This position requires a Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited Law School and membership in the State Bar of Arizona in good standing for a minimum of five (5) years.

    All paid City employees are eligible to participate in a voluntary 457(b) deferred compensation plan. Contributions are pre-tax and invested at the direction of the employee. The City does not contribute funds to this plan.

    Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS)
    ASRS eligibility is defined by the State. Participation is mandatory for employees deemed eligible. ASRS defines eligibility as employees scheduled to work 20 hours or more each week for 20 or more weeks per year.

    Sick Leave
    Temporary, seasonal and reserve employees accrue 1 hour of sick time for every 30 hours worked.
