Environmental Technician in the Public Works and Utilities Department’s Solid Waste & Recycling Division! In this role, you’ll support the implementation of the City’s environmental and sustainability programs, with a focus on waste reduction, recycling, organics diversion, and public outreach. This is a hands-on position that includes both fieldwork and administrative responsibilities to help ensure compliance with state mandates like SB 1383.

- Conducting field inspections to monitor compliance with SB 1383 and other recycling mandates
- Assisting in organizing and staffing compost giveaways, cleanup events, and outreach booths
- Preparing and distributing educational materials and social media content
- Collecting, tracking, and entering program data for state reporting and compliance
- Responding to public inquiries and coordinating service responses with contractors
- Supporting communication with the City’s waste hauler and partner agencies
- Representing the City at community meetings and events
- Providing support to higher-level professional staff on reporting and program coordination
QualificationsAny combination of education and experience demonstrating the ability to effectively and successfully perform the duties of the position is considered qualifying. A typical combination is as follows:
Education: A high school diploma and equivalent supplemented by college-level coursework in environmental studies, public administration, sustainability, or a related field is required. A Bachelor’s Degree is desirable.
Experience: A minimum of one (1) year of experience in environmental services, solid waste, recycling, or a sustainability program is required. Municipal or government experience is preferred.
License/Certificate Requirements: Certification related to solid waste, recycling, or sustainability (e.g., SWANA, CRRA) is desirable.
