    The Santos Manuel Student Union (SMSU), through its programs and facilities is a focal point of the campus where students, faculty, staff, administration, alumni and guests develop an enduring connection to the university. As a campus social hub, the SMSU assists in the retention and development of students, while encouraging a deeper understanding and appreciation of cultural pluralism, gender equity, and ethnic diversity. We accomplish this by providing a variety of cultural, social, educational and recreational activities, which create an environment conducive to personal growth and development. Planned activities also provide students with leadership opportunities and employment, which promotes an active learning experience as well as relaxation, entertainment, and social interaction. As the meeting place on campus for students and organizations, the facilities provide a comfortable and relaxing environment that embodies the delivery of services important to the university community. As a bridge between formal learning and life experience, co-curricular activities coordinated by the SMSU serve as a training ground for development of student leaders.

    Work Schedule

    This is a regular, full-time, salaried position. Willingness to work a flexible schedule as necessary in order to respond to emergency/urgent situations is required. This may include working extended hours, evenings, weekends and some holidays.

    General Purpose

    The Executive Director of the Santos Manuel Student Union, a 501 c3 auxiliary organization of CSU San Bernardino, provides leadership, management, direction, and financial oversight to all areas of the SMSU including all personnel, year-round programming, facilities & operations, administrative support services, and diversity & belonging-focused affinity centers. Oversight of CSUSB’s Recreation & Wellness Center is also under the purview of the Executive Director of the SMSU as student fees dedicated to the SMSU also support the Director, staff, and operations of the RecWell. Together, these areas serve more than 16,000 CSUSB students.

    The Executive Director also provides oversight of staffing and operations to the Rancho Mirage Student Center (RMSC) located on CSUSB’s Palm Desert Campus. The RMSC offers student engagement programming, similar to that of the SMSU, to the 2,000+ students who attend the PDC.

    The areas under the purview of the SMSU Executive Director employ approximately 40 managers & professional staff members and 250+ student employees.

    As part of the university’s commitment to shared governance, the Executive Director also works directly with and in support of the SMSU Board of Directors.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:
    • Responsible for major policy development and strategic planning for all operations, facilities and programs.
    • Supports student development through collaborative programming, student employment, and professional development.
    • Establishes measurable goals and objectives emphasizing all department contributions to the overall campus experience and University’s financial health.
    • Oversees and leads annual budgeting and planning process in conjunction with senior divisional leadership; administers and reviews all financial plans and budgets.
    • Monitors financial progress and changes while keeping senior leadership team abreast of the organization's financial status.
    • Engages stakeholders from the executive-level, student affairs, enrollment management, academic affairs, financial services, student body and community to develop customer- centered plans, procedures, and policies.
    • Identifies contractual, partnership, and shared service opportunities, with an emphasis on continuous process improvement to optimize spending and enhance service delivery to the University and regional community.
    • Cultivates relationships with current and potential vendors to align product and service delivery with institutional values.
    • Coordinates capital equipment purchases; facility development and renovations; and supports program initiatives.
    • Provides oversight of the establishment and monitoring of internal controls within the organization, to meet regulatory requirements.
    • Ensures compliance with federal and state regulations, industry standards, and institutional policies.
    • Provides direct or indirect oversight to areas above for both the Recreation & Wellness Center and the Rancho Mirage Student Center, where applicable.
    • Is a member of the Student Life Team, which includes all direct reports under the AVP/Dean of Students.
    • Serves as an integral member of the division’s leadership and contributes to the recruitment and retention of CSUSB students.
    • Participates in DSA Council, which includes all directors in the Division of Student Affairs.
    • Collaborates with DSA partners and colleagues across campus to develop and deliver programs that support student development, student success, and student wellness & belonging.
    • Other duties may be assigned.

    Supervisory Responsibilities

    Directly supervises a total of 2 directors, 2 associate directors, 4 other managers, and indirectly supervises 26 professional staff across the entire organization. Is responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of these units. Also supervises an executive assistant. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

    Education and Experience

    Bachelor's degree and at least 15 years of progressive leadership experience working with college students required, preferably related to student unions, student development, and/or student affairs in higher education, ideally supporting students in a supervisory or advising capacity.

    Language Skills

    Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format. Ability to effectively present information to campus leadership, public groups, and/or boards of directors.

    Mathematical Skills

    Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical Inference, fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry, and /or accounting/financial analysis. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

    Reasoning Ability

    Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables. Regularly exercises discretion and independent judgment.

    Computer Skills

    To perform this job successfully, an individual should have advanced knowledge of MS Office, including Excel Word, PowerPoint and Outlook.
