PURPOSE: Under the general supervision of the Dean for the College of Extended Education and International Programs (EEIP), the ALCP Instructor works with students whose native language is not English to help them acquire both fluency and accuracy in English. ALCP Instructors develop, plan, organize, and provide classroom instruction consistent with the program’s learning outcomes responsible for providing office support to maintain the administrative objectives of the Associate Dean of International Programs and Services.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to, the following: Develops and delivers lesson plans utilizing a broad range of appropriate differentiated techniques and strategies addressing all aspects of communication that develop each student’s ability to read, write, speak, and listen in content areas at levels that ensure learners meet or exceed learning targets, and allow English learners to meaningfully access the campus’ instructional program. Maintains accurate, complete, and correct records as required by the law, CSU policy and administrative regulation. ALCP Instructors engage in instructional activities including, but not limited to the following: lesson plan preparation; production of syllabi, maintenance of accurate and complete course, student assessment and student attendance records; grade reporting; office hours. ALCP Instructors engage in program activities such as the following: participation in orientation, program review, and activities; assistance with administration of English language proficiency exams, tests and assessments; participation in professional development activities; attendance at regular and ad-hoc instructor meetings; assistance with registration activities; participation in planning, developing, and evaluating the program’s curricular and instructional goals; service on and attendance at program committees as assigned. Provides a supportive and positive learning environment with high expectations that encourage student responsibility, enhance motivation, clearly communicate classroom routines, and incorporate challenging instructional strategies. Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity, interest, and abilities of students, and provides both social and emotional support for English language learners. Employs a variety of instructional techniques and teaching strategies to meet different aptitudes and interests of students, including current technology and whole-group/small-group or individual learning.
Other Functions: Perform other job-related duties and special projects as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Expertise in applied pedagogy for teaching the following to non-native English language learners: the core disciplines of listening, speaking, reading, writing and grammar in general or academic purpose; integrated skills and/or sub-domains such as vocabulary, test preparation, everyday functional communication, and aspects of American and Western cultures. Extensive knowledge of the following: English grammar, phonetics and phonemics, and semantics; theories of teaching and learning second languages; trends in English language teaching; knowledge of theories of second language acquisition; methods and materials for language teaching; curriculum design and development; testing and assessment in language education; applications of technology in language teaching and learning. Competence in language program evaluation; current research and developments in language education; and communication, organizational and administrative skills.
Ability to: communicate with linguistically, culturally, and ethnically diverse populations; work collaboratively and effectively with students, faculty, colleagues, and administrators across institutional departments.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Education: Master’s degree in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages); or a Master’s degree in Linguistics, or Applied Linguistics; or a Master’s degree in Education in Second Language Acquisition or Bilingual Education; or a Masters of English or Education with certificate in TESOL; or equivalent.
Experience: Minimum two years of EFL/ESL (English as a Foreign/Second Language) teaching experience.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Overseas teaching is a plus. Excellent spoken and written language skills, with English and foreign languages Institution-wide administration or planning experience as well as budgetary program analysis. Experience in information retrieval and data presentation and reporting. Experience working with diverse populations in an academic setting preferred. Exceptional ability to communicate verbally and in writing in a professional, persuasive and tactful manner. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships within a diverse, academic environment. Technical fluency with Oracle/PeopleSoft, CSU Common Management System or equivalent student information system; Microsoft Office Professional Suite, and Google mail and calendaring programs.

- Must possess and maintain a valid license to drive in the State of California, pass the Defensive Training Class, and be insurable under the University's liability coverage.
- Occasional evenings and/or weekend work is required.
PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT: Office environment with standard equipment and tasks. Position requires working at a computer and desk for extended periods of time. May require travel between campus offices and off-campus locations.
BENEFITS/PERKS: Employees who are not initially eligible upon hire date for CalPERS retirement membership are required to participate in the CSU Part-time/Seasonal/Temporary (PST) Retirement Plan in lieu of Social Security.
