    Associate Dean for the College of Ethnic Studies

    Administrator Level (for MPP positions only)

    This position is an MPP Level III in the California State University Management Personnel Plan (MPP), reporting to the Dean for the College of Ethnic Studies.

    $12,500 - $13,333.00 Per Month ($150,000.00 - $159,996.00 Annually)

    Position Summary

    San Francisco State University (SFSU) invites nominations and applications for the position of Associate Dean of the College of Ethnic Studies. The College of Ethnic Studies (CoES) Associate Dean works to support the Dean’s strategic vision including implementing various initiatives and supporting the operations of the College of Ethnic Studies. The Associate Dean must be grounded in Ethnic Studies and demonstrate a commitment to students' learning and empowerment of our communities. In support of the Dean, the Associate Dean works with five department chairs in the college’s shared governance processes, and works to ensure that the systems supporting the student experience at every level are well-organized, and effective. The College of Ethnic Studies has over 100 faculty members, 30 degree programs and over 6,000 students enrolled each semester. The Associate Dean must be detail-oriented and possess strong interpersonal and relational skills.

    The CoES Associate Dean holds a twelve-month administrative position (MPP) that reports directly to the Dean, and works collaboratively with on- and off -campus stakeholders to further the college goals, assist every program in meeting their standards and outcomes, and support student success. The main areas of responsibility are collaborative leadership and planning; curriculum support and development; enrollment scheduling/management and student success; student services and support; and faculty support.

    Position Information

    Collaborative Leadership and Planning

    • Develops an understanding of all aspects of the university and college, all faculty and staff members and their roles, and all departments and programs, in order to create an inclusive community, and enhance communication and operations;

    • Supports the Dean through confidential brainstorming, problem-solving, scenario-building, and personnel discussions;

    • Attends CoES Chairs' Council, Associate Deans' meetings, Registrar meetings;

    • Hosts all-college meeting at beginning of fall and spring semesters;

    • Supervises front office work study staff;

    • Supervises Assistant to Associate Dean;

    • Oversees academic advising in the College;

    • Manages all-College Canvas site to disseminate information and coordinate meetings;

    • Manages Facebook and Instagram accounts for the College;

    • Represents the Dean at all executive level meetings when they are not able to attend;

    • Works closely with the Dean's Leadership Team including the college fiscal officer;

    • Works collaboratively with the Dean’s suite team including the HR/Scheduler and Dean’s Assistant;

    • Meets deadlines, works within timelines, and communicates clearly and in a timely manner;

    • Represents the COES in the broader community;

    • Serves on committees in the college, university, and community;

    • Represents the Dean and the college to the university and the community;

    • Supervises, supports, and evaluates staff members working in the college

    Curriculum Support and Development

    • Informs leadership, faculty and departments of university curriculum timelines, proposals, and submissions;

    • Monitors all curriculum proposals for quality and alignment with COES Commitments;

    • Manages and distributes enrollment targets from DUEAP for the College;

    • Approves all course proposals (new/revised);

    • Advises chairs on departmental or curricular changes to advance student retention and successful graduation;

    • Resolves course scheduling conflicts and errors with College Scheduler and Department Chairs;

    • Oversees the development of new degree programs for the College (certificates, minors, and majors);

    • Guides faculty through course proposals and course revisions;

    • Oversees College of Ethnic Studies GE and if necessary, convenes the college GE committee;

    • Updates College listing in the University Bulletin.

    Enrollment Management and Student Success Planning

    • Manages recruitment processes with a focus on increasing enrollment in every program;

    • Monitors enrollment targets, FTES, and daily course enrollment data, and consults with relevant departments;

    on course enrollments and low-enrolled courses;

    • Manages and distributes enrollment targets from DUEAP for the College;

    • Reviews enrollment in all College courses, working with department chairs to eliminate under-enrolled courses.

    Student Services and Support

    • Approves withdrawal petitions, maximum-units petitions, grade exceptions, waiver of college regulations, and grade change petitions;

    • Resolves student grievances and acts as a mediator in resolving grade appeal disputes;

    • Forms and oversees Grade Appeal Committee (GAC) for the college;

    • Oversees and implements all scholarships, through Academic Works;

    • Implements IRA student travel awards;

    • Facilitates undergraduate honors nominees to submit to Provost;

    • Facilitates distinguished graduate student nominees to submit to Graduate Studies;

    • Hosts Dean's List celebrations;

    • Hosts all-college graduation celebration.

    Faculty Support

    • Facilitates departmental IRA budget proposals and project approval notification;

    • Runs faculty travel awards and internal grants (FURI and FRGI);

    • Reviews and gives feedback on junior faculty members' application to university-wide paid leave awards and ORSP awards;

    • Assists faculty with RTP files and process;

    • Works with Chairs and faculty to resolve RD grades.

    • Work with Chairs on lecturer and AOC evaluations

    Other Duties as Assigned

    Minimum Qualifications

    • The COES Associate Dean is an experienced and equity-minded education leader focused on ensuring that every undergraduate and graduate student has the opportunity to successfully complete their degree and/or certificate programs;

    • To demonstrate readiness to lead an academic college, the candidate must have held or currently hold a tenured position at an accredited institution of higher education in a discipline or the equivalent, with a Ph.D., Ed.D or a terminal degree from an accredited college or university in a field or discipline relevant to the College of Ethnic Studies, and qualified to serve at the rank of an Associate Professor or higher;

    • To demonstrate aptitude for educational leadership, the candidate must have demonstrated leadership with a minimum of three years of leadership and management experience as a department chair, director or similar role;

    • The candidate must show that their goals and values are aligned with the shared principles in the College of Ethnic Studies and in SF State’s Mission Statement, through teaching activities, accomplishments, service, scholarship, or other means.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Ability to collect and analyze complex data and write reports; experience with continuous improvement or

    • Successful project management, from idea to implementation, with effective consensus building and

    teamwork
