    Description

    Basic Function

    Under moderate supervision, performs skilled electrical construction, installation, and maintenance tasks on a variety of electrical systems and equipment.

    Examples of Duties

    • Manages facilities electrical systems projects from inception to completion
    • Installs and maintains a wide range of electrical apparatus, including control boards, electric motors, and yard lighting systems
    • Performs preventive and remedial maintenance on electrical systems in bus servicing and shop equipment
    • Installs and maintains power distribution systems, including transformers for voltages up to 4800 volts, distribution panels, lighting, and service outlets
    • Uses test instruments such as ammeter, ohmmeter, megger, voltmeter, and other basic tools of the electrical trade
    • Develops and works from electrical specifications, schematic diagrams, and construction blueprints
    • Operates a variety of vehicles including truck equipment with bucket lifts
    • Must comply with all California Occupational Safety and Health Administration (Cal/OSHA) regulations and utilize approved safety equipment and personal protective gear including, but not limited to, respirators, eye, and hearing protective devices (HPD), if and when required
    • Contributes to ensuring that the Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) policies and programs of Metro are carried out

    Minimum Qualifications

    Education
    • None required; completion of 18 semester hours of coursework in electricity or electrical maintenance at a recognized trade school preferred
    Experience
    • 4 years' experience as an industrial maintenance electrician.
    Certifications/Licenses/Special Requirements
    • Must possess or be in the process of obtaining a valid General Electrician Certification from the Department of Industrial Relations (DIR). Proof of completion must be provided within six months of hire date.
    • Valid California Class C Driver's License

    • Design, construction, installation, and maintenance of electrical equipment and systems
    • Vehicle operations and safety
    • Applicable business software applications

    • Installing, maintaining, and repairing electrical equipment
    • Troubleshooting and correcting electrical problems or issues
    • Reading and understanding wiring diagrams and schematics

    Ability to (defined as a present competence to perform an observable behavior or produce an observable result)
    • Safely operate a variety of hand tools and power equipment
    • Follow oral and written instructions
    • Work at heights up to 60 feet
    • Travel to offsite locations
    • Read, write, speak, and understand English
    • Stand
    • Bend or twist at the neck, waist and/or knees
    • Intermittently sit, stand, stoop
    • Push and/or pull
    • Lift or carry 50 lbs. or less
    • Reach by extending hand(s) and/or arm(s) in any direction
    • Use equipment requiring high hand and finger dexterity
    • Safely use sharp objects and tools
    • Operate foot pedals
    • Feel to perceive an object(s) size, shape, temperature or texture by means of senses in your skin

    Working Conditions
    • Work on elevated surfaces or below ground level
    • Work on slippery or uneven surfaces

    • Exposure to radiant or electrical energy (e.g., ionizing radiation, overhead catenary or contact rail power distribution, etc.)
    • Exposure to outdoor weather including extreme heat, cold, dampness and/or humidity
    • High dust, dirt, and/or grease environment

    • Work with regular exposure to odors or fumes
    • Work with vibrating equipment
    • Exposure to moving machinery and/or vehicles
    • Extensive safety training and/or use of protective devices and personal protective gear
    Physical Effort Required
    • Walking (distance 5' to 100')
    • Crawling, crouching, squatting, stooping and/or kneeling
    • Bending or twisting at the neck, waist and/or knees
    • Heavy lifting or carrying 51 lbs. or more with assistance
    • Climbing (e.g., ladders, scaffolds, stairs, poles, into vehicles, etc.)
    • Balancing to prevent falling or erratic movement
    • Driving and/or operating heavy equipment
    • Good distance vision and/or depth perception to judge distances
    • Color recognition (e.g., distinguishing wires, resistors, containers, light signals, etc.)
