    The Position

    Contra Costa County Behavioral Health Services seeks a board-eligible/certified Adult Psychiatrist to serve in one of our regional behavioral health clinics - San Pablo, Concord, and Antioch. The position is part-time to full-time.

    Annual Salary: $245,732.04 - $279,240.96

    Employee salary or Independent Contractor rate of $184.80 per hour
    Employees may qualify for up to $60,000 in Student Loan Repayment


    We offer the choice of two compensation pathways. The first is as a County Employee. This pathway offers a competitive salary and benefits package, which includes vacation, sick leave, County-funded malpractice insurance, retirement plan, health benefits and reimbursement of professional expenses. The second compensation pathway is an Independent Contractor. This includes an hourly rate (see above) and County-funded malpractice insurance; it does not include the other benefits outlined above.

    Contra Costa County’s BHS offers an opportunity to work with a diverse patient group with severe mental illness and participate in a team model. We value cultural humility and practice in an integrated manner with our medical provider colleagues and our other clinical staff, including those in substance use, housing and case management.

    Duties of the position include:
    • Conducting psychiatric assessments (90 minutes) and follow-up visits (30 minutes)
    • Making diagnoses and developing comprehensive case histories
    • Creating treatment plans and prescribing medications
    • Coordinating with consulting medical specialists
    • Acting as physician member of a multi-disciplinary team
    • Conferring with the relatives and loved ones of patients
    • Maintaining electronic records according to the standards of BHS and other regulatory agencies

    Certification and licensure:
    • Board Certification or completion of an accredited psychiatric residency program
    • License to practice medicine or osteopathy in the State of California

    The appropriate candidate should have knowledge of:
    • Current developments, trends and research in the field of psychiatry, medicine and addiction
    • Community mental health practice and program options
    • Psychopharmacology, including laws regarding informed consent, dosage ranges, drug incompatibilities and side effects
    • General medicine and its relationship to psychiatry
    • Substance use disorders and their relationship to psychiatry
    • Psychiatric principles and practices
    • Treatment approaches and differential diagnosis of the mentally ill
    • HIPAA regulations
    • Medical ethics as they relate to patient care
    The appropriate candidate should have the skills to:
    • Diagnose and treat patients.
    • Develop and monitor appropriate treatment plans.
    • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other staff, patients and patient families.
    • Learn and apply laws and regulations governing California health service providers.
    • Maintain medical records adhering to the stands of BHS and regulatory agencies.
