    SAFETY STATEMENT

    CLASSIFICATION SUMMARY

    The Cadet Program offers an introduction to a rewarding career in law enforcement to those interested. Candidates must be between the age of 18 and 20 years when entering the program. The program will provide hands-on training and mentorship to develop the skills and knowledge necessary to prepare Cadets for full-time employment opportunities as a Police Officer with the Kennewick Police Department. Police Cadets will be eligible to apply for tuition reimbursement during the program and must have a strong interest in securing full-time employment with the City of Kennewick in law enforcement.

    Examples of Work Performed (Illustrative Only)

    Depending upon assignment, typical duties may include, but are not limited to the following:
    • Perform a variety of fundamental duties in various divisions of the Kennewick Police Department.
    • Provide basic assistance in research projects, special reports, and special departmental problems.
    • Gather, compile, tabulate, and report statistical data.
    • Acquire working knowledge of department practices, procedures, equipment, and organizational systems.
    • Perform related duties as assigned.


    Employment Standards

    • 18-20 years old at the time of the initial Physical Abilities Test (PAT) and Written Essay exam.
    • Must meet the requirements to be qualified for consideration of Civil Service appointment as an Entry Level Police Officer between age 21 and 22.
    • Must pass civil service testing standards and meet department standards.
    • Must be enrolled or have an approved plan to enroll at an accredited college or university taking courses as a student leading to a degree and/or certificate at time of hire.
    • Must have a high school diploma, GED Certificate, or provide certification from the state department of education that his or her schooling meets the minimum requirements for a high school diploma.
    Physical Abilities Test (PAT)
    Must successfully pass the Physical Abilities Test (PAT). For more information about the PAT requirements, visit the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission website https://cjtc.wa.gov/training-education/blea

    Supplemental Requirements

    Knowledge of:
    • Simple research and statistical methods.
    • English usage, spelling, and punctuation.

    Ability to:
    • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
    • Collect, compile, analyze, and interpret statistical data.


    This position is not subject to health or retirement benefits. But, this position is eligible for Washington State Paid Sick Leave to accrue 1 hour for every 40 hours worked.
